Meet Jack

Jack is an 8 year-old lab mix who was saved from a shelter. A friend of Ruff Love Rescue contacted us with a plea for help. While working through a volunteer program to help rehabilitate dogs in shelters, Corey witnessed this sweet boy laying on the cold concrete. She learned that his human mother had passed away two weeks prior. Overwhelmed, his human father called animal control and surrendered 34 cats and 2 dogs - one of which was Jack. Jack sat in the shelter for two weeks, cold and alone, hoping that a kind soul would take notice. Knowing that Ruff Love Rescue helps and rehabilitates special needs dogs, Corey called us. Jack walks with a rear wheelchair. He can stand, but not for long periods at a time. He was evaluated at Carolina Veterinary Specialists (CVS) to see if it is possible for him to learn to walk without the wheelchair. Dr Skeen at CVS in Winston Salem NC, put Jack through several basic tests of mobility and nerve awareness. Since we do not have a lot of history on how Jack was injured. Dr Skeen's best assessment is that he had some kind of impact to the spine. More than likely a severe compressed vertebrate. Dr. Skeen felt that at this point Jack would not be a good candidate for surgery as too much time has elapsed from his injury. Dr. Skeen wants Jack to be walked more and spend less time in the cart. Jack can stand but he has no feeling in his feet. He been through physical therapy. Despite his challenges, Jack is just a normal loving dog. It's almost like he doesn't realize anything is wrong with his legs. He enjoys spending time with other dogs and humans, and he gets along with kids. His foster home is wonderful, but Jack needs a forever family. Someone to give him love and safety for life. To care for Jack, you have to be willing & able to carry a 50lb dog. His care is 24/7. It is a huge commitment. Lots of towels. Accidents can happen a lot more than a regular dog. It is best if Jack is not left unattended for long. The perfect home for Jack would be one where at least one family member can take him to work with them, or where someone stays at home with him. Jack has to be helped to go to the bathroom. It is important that his bladder is expressed as much as possible. He can poop on his own, but we can show his new parents how to help him which makes it easier for both. Daily care is a lot of love and dedication. Jack is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and on heartworm & flea/tick preventatives. Please email dogs315@northstate.net for more information about Jack. If you are unable to adopt at this time, you may sponsor this pet. Monthly expenses include food, heartworm preventative, flea/tick preventative, and grooming. Our animals are given annual exams, heartworm testing, and vaccinations. Ruff Love Rescue is a no-kill facility. Therefore, if an animal is never adopted, it will live out its life with us.
