Teddy has had it rough. He was callously dumped in an overcrowded Philadelphia kill shelter when he was going blind and in a great deal of pain from untreated glaucoma. The family who left Teddy at the shelter said they no longer wanted him because he was now “too old”. NEBTR was contacted and scrambled to make room for Teddy in a foster home so his life would be spared.


He has been with NEBTR now for 1.5 years. Teddy lost his sight but his eyes are now stable and do not cause him discomfort. He has been thoroughly evaluated by ophthalmologists at Cornell. He just needs some moisturizing drops once or twice a day.


Other than Teddy’s damaged eyes, he is quite healthy. He is active for an older guy and likes to be on the move. He likes his people, but is not a big cuddler. He loves to be petted and scratched though and he likes to play. His favorite toys are his Snoopy and Woodstock stuffed toys. He plays with them during the day and sleeps with them at night.


Teddy is very particular about his doggie friends. It can be hard to predict who he will like and who he will not. He has a couple of canine buddies in his foster home but at the same time he really dislikes some other dogs and will be instantly aggressive with them if he is allowed contact. Since Teddy doesn’t get along with a couple of the resident dogs and is aggressive with cats, he has to be separated from the other animals in his foster home almost all the time. He seems to get along with calm submissive dogs that don't react to him. Teddy loves leash walks and will let you guide him along. He does not have a problem with other dogs out on a walk because he can't see them.



Teddy doesn't do stairs and would be best in a home with one level. He spends a lot of time gated in his room (the laundry room) and he does get lonely, stressed and frustrated. His fosters try hard to spend time with Teddy and give him the love and attention he craves and deserves, but they have full time jobs, a house full of their own pets and special needs fosters, so it’s very difficult.


Teddy deserves a really good home where all his needs will be met. He has been waiting for so long and hasn’t been able to live the full life he should be leading. He is so great one on one when his fosters are able to get him out for a walk or a car ride or even on trips to the vet.


Teddy LOVES to explore the world with his ears and nose and he has adjusted well to his lack of sight. He can spend hours in a fenced yard on a nice day and he is good on leash walks as long as he doesn’t have to go up steps. He knows that “watch” means there is an obstacle in his path and he will stop and maneuver around it. He will sit nicely for a treat.


Teddy weighs a sturdy 23 lbs. and has been compared to a bowling ball and a Hampshire piglet. Our guess is that he is about 10 years old. Teddy can seem a little gruff and grumpy at times, but once you get to know him, you will learn to appreciate his character and will realize that he really is very social and funny and that he loves to be with his people.

A good home for Teddy would be a home with adults who would like a sociable dog who loves his walks and car rides, a fenced yard where he can explore and no stairs. Teddy will be the happiest dog in the world if he could have a new home for the new year.

Teddy is currently being fostered in Penn Yann, NY (Finger Lakes region) and transportation assistance can be provided.

There is a $10 application fee which helps to defer our costs. This does not in any way guarantee the dog you are requesting and applications are not based on first come, first served. Our goal is to carefully evaluate each applicant's individual situation to find the home that is best match for each dog in our care.

Our adoption fees are as follows:
$600- Puppies 6 months to 2 yrs
$500- 2 yrs to 4 yrs
$450- 5 yrs to 7 yrs
TBD- over 8 years based on health & behavior
(Our adoption fees are non-negotiable and lowering is only considered in the dogs with behavioral or medical issues.)

In addition to spay/neutering and updated vaccines all adopted dogs will come with a two week food supply for transition, current medical records, in depth written assessment of all behavior, observations and routines while in foster care, leash, collar and a supply of any necessary medication.
