Meet NYLA

Nyla (A11953210) Hi I'm Nyla (A11953210), but my pen pal calls me Nyla-bean! Like a little black jelly bean, always looked over, but never failing to surprise people with how wonderful I am. You can email my Pen Pal, Erin, at m.erin.henry@gmail.com for more information about me.

I'm a 1-2 yo petite black terrier mix that weighs about 40 pounds. In late November I was picked up as a stray by some very nice animal control officers. I don't really like it here at the shelter, and so I tend to curl up in my kennel, or just sit quietly, while other dogs are barking and jumping around, making it very easy for people to look right past me. But if you stop by my kennel and say my name, I'll give you the teeniest of tail wags to let you know I hear you, and then get up to come greet you with the hopes that you'll take me out. If you do, I get so happy that I can hardly contain herself! I know EXACTLY how to get outside!
I love toys of all shapes and sizes, and after I've had the chance to zoom I'm content to just cuddle in your lap. I hate to brag, but I'm pretty smart; I'm food motivated and have already learned how to sit well, so my pen pal is teaching me that when I want something I should sit for it! I have also learned to lay down, am working on play dead, and also how to walk well on a leash. My pen pal tells me I walk pretty well in an easy-walk harness.
Just a few weeks ago I went on a hike with a pack of other shelter dogs and had a great time, and now I'm one of the only ones left of the pack that is still at ACCT! I just don't get it! I even rode well in the car! I just hopped right in and laid down on the backseat, ready to go anywhere and have an adventure!

...Hmmmmm, what else is there to tell you about me... I really like cats... but my pen pal says that I shouldn't live with them, because the way I like them isn't the way you are supposed to like cats... who knew?! I really really love to play with other dogs, in fact, I have had play dates with two big and handsome shelter mates of mine, they are such hunks! My pen pal tells me I can be quite rambunctious so make sure you bring any resident dogs with you to make sure they will like playing with me.

I was adopted and returned in mid-december for being "destructive" but my pen pal brought me home to her apartment last week to see what they meant, and she says I was a perfect angel! I was just so happy to lay down on a nice rug instead of the floor of my kennel for once, and it really made me long for a nice home with a great family, could you be it?

I'm spayed, microchipped and up to date with my vaccines, so I'm ready to go home today!

If you want to meet me I'll keep waiting patiently at ACCT, in a blue star-covered bandana with my name on it, for my new family to come take me home. Won't you consider fostering or adopting me, and saving my life? I pinky swear that you won't regret it! "
Nyla is part of ACCT's Pen Pal program and she has a volunteer dedicated to work with her, socializing her, communicating with potential foster parents or adopters and providing post-adoption support!
If you'd like to learn more about Nyla please email her Pen Pal, Erin, at m.erin.henry@gmail.com.

Are you interested in one of the dogs at PSPCA? If so…
Great! First, decide if you are interested in fostering or adopting!

To determine whether you should apply to foster versus adopt, please consider the following information:

-To adopt a dog means to commit to being the primary caregiver for the dog and keep it in your possession, for yourself for the rest of its life. Adult dogs are $75 to adopt, puppies (under 6 months old) are $125- that donation covers the vaccines, microchip, surgery, etc that the dog has received.

- To foster a dog means to commit to temporarily caring for the dog/cat while also working to find the dog/cat a “forever home”/adopter. While fostering the dog/cat remains PSPCA’s property, but the foster parent takes responsibility for marketing the dog/cat, and doing a preliminary screening of any potential adopters. When an adopter is found, the foster parent must coordinate with the PSPCA Life Saving office to approve the adopter and finalize the adoption. If the foster parent decides after time that they would like to keep the dog/cat, they must complete the adoption process and pay the adoption fee. ** Fostering is not a trial adoption.**

More about fostering:

Although previous fostering experience is not required, ideal foster care provider will have basic knowledge of animal care and training and be committed to finding their foster animal a safe and loving “forever home”. As a foster care provider, you will provide the animals with care including, food, water, shelter, training, grooming and medical treatment when necessary. The PSPCA will provide clinic and vet care, behavior and training resources, and adoption counseling. We rely on the foster parent to find an adoptive home for the dog/cat, but we can help! We provide adoption events for you attend, can post your foster dog/cat on Petfinder for you, etc. We cannot guarantee how long a foster dog/cat will be in your care, since you keep the dog/cat until an adoptive home is found, which can be anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months depending on the dog/cat, and how heavily you market it.
