About NEELY: Beautiful, brown-eyed Neely's life took a bad turn
when she found herself at a high kill-shelter. Lucky for her, she was granted a
reprieve when the local Humane Society got her out of there to give her a chance
at adoption, and a new life. But once there, Neely was found to have two strikes
against her: First, she tested positive for heartworm, and second, as is the
case with so many Malamutes, Neely doesn't get along with other dogs and wants
to be your "one and only". Unfortunately, the issue with other dogs made her
ineligible for placement on their adoption floor, and as they continued to fill
to overflowing, Neely's time was running out. They were desperate for help and
we wanted to be there for her. We know that perfect "Malamute person" is out
there -- the person who is accustomed to Mals and who won't be bothered by the
"one dog" rule. She is a loving, beautiful girl, begging for that new life with
a family who will cherish her -- who will never miss her heartworm preventative
or allow her to end up in a shelter.

Neely is estimated be about 4 years old. We named her "Neely" after a character
in "Valley of the Dolls", as she's a TOTAL doll-baby herself! She is a
good-sized girl, but not huge, weighing around 65 pounds. This is right within
the breed standard for female Malamutes. Her advocate from the Humane Society
has a lot of Malamute experience and was very smitten with this beauty, writing:
"Neely is a real 'people person'. She loves everybody and isn't picky about who
that special person might be, as long as you have some love for her! After an
introduction and a few sniffs, everyone she meets is a brand new friend!"

UPDATE: Neely had her heartworm treatment and has long since recovered. This
poor sweetie is STILL waiting to catch somebody's eye. We have a new volunteer
who regularly spends time improving the lives with our dogs who are in the
boarding kennel. They all look forward to seeing him, as he takes them on long
walks in the country (where the kennel is located), brushes them, plays with
them, and in general just gives them special, one-on-one attention and love. He
really enjoys Neely, and shared his thoughts: "I just adore Neely - she is so
loving and affectionate! She loves, loves, LOVES to be petted.  She will
sit in my lap and give kisses. She is a bit like Skaya -- those girl Malamutes,
huh? - in that
she does get jealous when she isn't taken out for a walk. :)  As tough is
she is with other dogs, she's kind of a wimp :)   When startled (a
falling branch in the woods, or a slamming door) she  tucks under my feet.
She loves our walks.  She enjoys walking ahead of me, but always looks back
at me to make sure I'm still there. In fact, when we walk on the trails in the
woods, if I get too far behind, she will run back to my feet and sit, as if
waiting for me. She is happy and bouncy outside. She sits on command and takes
treats gently ... we're working on 'shake' now!   She enjoys being
brushed, and you can tell she will give some lucky new owner her heart AND her
loyalty. She'll be perfect for someone who wants one dog to be their best friend
and companion!

Neely is such a good, good girl with so much love to give ... and she's waited
so patiently and so long. She puts her head on her paws every night, trying to
stay awake, hoping there's still a chance that today is the day her new person
or family will come for her, and not wanting to miss her chance for a forever
home. But inevitably the moon rises and the stars come out, and she closes her
eyes to dream about a home of her own, and to rest up for tomorrow. Because
surely, tomorrow, someone will accept her love and give her some in return!

Please let her hopes and dreams not be in vain ...
Due to a lack of foster homes, we had to place Neely with our rescue partner
at the paid boarding kennel in order to save her life.  Without boarding,
she'd have died in the shelter.   If
you can't adopt, you can still help Neely by contributing toward her 'room and board'.
Please see more info on how to donate, below!

Neely is new to our program, and we look forward to learning more about
her.  In the meantime, though we do our best, we don't always get the
updates up as quickly as we'd like, and there's often new information that isn't
yet posted.  If you are interested in Neely,  please
EMAIL US
to request more information and/or an adoption application. This
dog's adoption donation is $225. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain!
This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or
neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.
What to do if you want to
adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application!
We will review your application to determine if there is a good match
between your family and this dog.  We may suggest another if we can offer a
better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.

NOTE:
In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from
shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's
history.  We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age
estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective
experience.  Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our
care is that of "full disclosure".  It is our goal to ensure the
adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between
the dog and the adopting person or family.  In some instances, because of
applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of
time.  If we have identified a temperament or health condition while
the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to
adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the
issue or condition prior to adoption.  Northern Lights' screening process
is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to
treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be
contractually responsible for doing so.

NORTHERN
LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to
foster dogs in need of a second chance.
