UPDATE - Rona is going on trial placement! She will be missed by all the wonderful Volunteers who have walked her and taken her to events, but she has had one visit to her potential new home, and all went well. So next step is a two week trial placement to see if she can settle in and get along with the adopter's other two dogs. We are keeping fingers and toes crossed that after over one year, Rona's ideal home awaits her! Rona is a 115lb spayed female Central Asian Shepherd. Petfinder does not have this choice available on its breed list, and the Caucasian is the closest relative listed. The best way to describe her appearance to the uninitiated is like a short-haired blonde St. Bernard with ears cropped to the skull and a partially cropped tail, minus most of the drool. Rona is an amazing dog who enchants all who meet her. Considered a rare breed, she was brought to this country for breeding purposes but apparently our...
Considered a rare breed, she was brought to this country for breeding purposes but apparently our big girl is a feminist and objected to her only choice of mate. Her refusal nearly got her killed, as she was considered of no value if she was not willing to produce puppies. But someone convinced the owner to surrender her to Rescue. CAS Rescue in the U.S. was contacted, but declined to take her, so she is now spayed and looking for an Ontario home where love don't mean making babies. Please note that local adopters only will be considered so we can better keep track of her. Rona has a lot of love to give and she loves being around people, however she is not known around young kids or cats (she might pounce on cats and injure them) and a paw the size of hers could inflict a good scratch, so cannot be placed in a home that have them. She does not like pushy dogs and if they annoy her they might find themselves pinned under a large pissed dog. but she has not harmed any and is tolerant of other dogs when properly introduced. In fact she could be a poster child for those who believe that love is blind - she saves her greatest same-species affection for a feisty 10lb n/male Jack Russell Terrier who isn't sure what to make by being constantly licked by a tongue bigger than his head! Rona needs a home with secure fencing and containment. Her breed is one of the oldest livestock protection breeds, bred by the nomadic Mongol tribes to guard their livestock and encampments. So her nature is to be loyal and enjoy the great outdoors. But she is also stubborn and single-minded when coyotes make their presence known in the neighborhood., and her natural endurance for long walks in warm (but not hot) to cool weather needs to be matched by her human companions. She is most happy when she is home from a long walk and snoozing in the living room near her people. She is currently being fostered at a Boarding Kennel in the Sutton area north of Toronto.
