Amy is a pit bull mix around 2 years old, weighs about 46lbs, who seems determined to shatter stereotypes. We have not detected a drop of dog-aggression in her temperament, even when confronted with nippy, noisy dogs who might be asking for it. She is very sweet, loves to be petted, and will sleep soundly and motionlessly all night long, whether in her crate or nestled in bed with you. Amy is housetrained provided she is taken out regularly to do her business, which she will in a timely fashion without encouragement. She has even asked to go out by standing by the back door (where we take them to go out) and looking at us expectantly. Amy does have some fear-related issues, though. She will alert us with barks that can scare people when someone is at the door and when they first come in. She has a fear of most men she is not familiar with: the more attention the intimidating man pays her, the more she feels cornered. If the man, however, simply ignores her, avoiding all eye contact especially, she calms down quickly and her behavior shifts to that of curiosity. She wants to smell and identify the new man to further assure herself that he is not out to get her. Amy also has some joint discomfort in her knees especially. When she arrived at her foster home she had very little muscle mass in her back legs, limped on walks, sat down slowly and carefully to one side, and even lost her balance and fell twice or thrice on walks in the woods. She has been taken to a vet and diagnosed with arthritis. She is on vitamin supplements as well as a short term prescription medication, and coupled with daily exercise and ample rest, she has gained much strength and confidence on her feet. She still doesnt like to stay standing still for long, but she loves walks and playing with our other dogs. She has lots of energy and needs exercise but with a mind and one eye toward keeping her from becoming too strained. Exercise and rest are equally important for her. Dont worry; Amy is worth all the attention. She has no food or toy aggression at all, and once she trusts you, she trusts you completely. We feel she will do best in a home with another dog that can show her how to be nice and calm and trusting.
