Update 10-15-10: Dandy has had two negative skin scrapes in a row and is now neutered and ready to find a permanent new home! His adoption fee is $150. Update 9-7-10: Dandy is looking good and beginning to resemble a real dog! He's had 3 mitaban dips and as you can tell his beautiful brindle coat is coming back in very shiny and sleek. The first two photos were taken on 9-6 while the third was taken on 7-18, the day after he came to us. He's still got a ways to go but the improvement in less than two months is dramatic. Dandy loves playing with other dogs, still really enjoys mealtime, and snoozing on his cozy bed. Once he's ready for adoption, we're sure Dandy is going to make a fine friend for a lucky family!
Update 8-20-10: Dandy is doing very well and is recovering much faster than we had expected! He has now had two mitaban dips and his hair is growing back in slowly but surely. He's gained about 10 pounds since he first came to us in mid-July and now has the energy to play and wrestle with the other foster dogs. It's still going to be a number of weeks before he's ready for adoption as he has to have more dips and then 3 consecutive skin scrapes with no evidence of mites before he's out of the woods. But this sweet dog is definitely on the mend! We'll post new photos and a new video soon so please check back!
Dandy is an 8 month-old Boxer mix pup who came into a southern Ohio dog pound with a case of demodectic mange that's about as bad as it gets. This poor sweet pup was nothing but scaly, crusty scabs from his muzzle to his toes to the tip of his tail. When we saw him posted on the shelter website, we knew we had to help him. When Dandy came to us on July 17, he looked even worse than in his shelter photos. A lot of the sores were open and bloody. He was so thin--without any hair, you could see every bone in his body. He went to the vet as soon as he arrived here where the diagnosis of demodectic mange was confirmed. Over the last few weeks, Dandy's been on a course of antibiotics for a secondary skin infection and has received twice weekly benzoyl peroxide baths to help his skin heal before starting mitaban dips to get rid of the mange mites. In spite of his challenging medical condition, this pup has the most wonderful, sweet disposition. You can tell he's grateful for all of the attention, love, and good food he's been receiving over the last few weeks. Dandy is perfect in his crate, seems to be housetrained, and now that he's feeling a little stronger, is actually starting to play with toys and some of the other foster dogs. We expect that Dandy's medical expenses will be at least $750 as he will be in our care for many months before he's ready for adoption. Dandy won't be neutered until his mange is gone. Please consider making a donation to help this sweet boy. We will post updates here on his progress. We and Dandy can't thank you enough for your help!
