Meet Chocolate

Meet Chocolate! This poor little guy has had a rough start to his life and he's only 11 months old! He needs a loving family to call his own. He's only about 35 lbs and needs to gain a lot of weight, he's very skinny right now, as he's been in a shelter for about 6 weeks now. We believe he could be a GSP-mix, but he's cute as can be!He even has his own blog so you can follow his progress through foster care: http://brownheadedhound.blogspot.com/He was picked up as a stray down South last year and a family in NY adopted him. After only having him for a few months, they discovered he has food allergies and needs special food. They decided they couldn't afford to pay for his special food, as it's slightly more expensive than some of the higher-grade dog foods. When his family decided they couldn't afford the food, they took him off of it and as a result of this, he has lost most of his hair unfortunately and scratched himself to try and get some relief. He's been bounced around and lived in 2 shelters, 1 home and now a new foster home so it's hard to pinpoint exactly what type of food will control his allergies at this point. Once he gets settled in his foster home, we are going to 'test' his diet and see what type of food(s) he can have. We know for certain that he is fine on Science Diet Z/D food. The shelter put him on the Z/D food and he has regained some hair, but he has a ways to go. With a few weeks in foster care, good diet and some bathing, he should be as good as new. His hair is thin on his face, body and chest. His poor little belly and inside of his legs have no hair at all. The hair he does have is sun bleached and is easily pulled out, but he has a beautiful dark liver undercoat that is starting to come through.Other than that, he is healthy and up to date on his vetting, with the exception of an ear infection which he's being treated for.We do know he lived with other dogs and children and will provide some updates on his personality/behavior as his foster Mom learns more about him.We can say that he is timid of quick movements, but extremely sweet and friendly once he warms up to you.He rides well in a car and is good when crated. He is housebroken, doesn't counter surf and stays off the furniture, so whoever had him previously really worked on his manners to be so good for being such a young boy. He's very inquisitive in the house and well mannered. He does appear to have a little bit of food aggression towards other dogs when eating, but his foster family is working on that, and we're fairly certain that once he isn't 'starving' anymore and realizes there is always more food coming, that behavior should subside. If you are interested in giving him the life he deserves, please email us at GSPrescueNJ@hotmail.com and ask for an adoption application.
