Thumbelina is a 9-month-old, 50-pound, black female Greyhound who was born with a slightly malformed hind leg. Although she was not meant for the racetrack, she has a spirit and will to live that impressed her breeder. He kept her with her littermates because he felt she would benefit from playing and frisking with them. But eventually they began knocking her over at every opportunity, and keeping her away from the food pan. The breeder realized it was time for us to find a home for her. We had Thumbelinas leg x-rayed and examined by three veterinarians: a radiologist, a general practitioner, and an orthopedic surgeon. All three agreed that Thumbelinas leg would not benefit from surgery. The best treatment is to gently massage and stretch her foot because she has a tendency to curl her toes under when she walks. Also, she would benefit from wearing a small boot when she is outside so that she steps on the pads of her foot, rather than on the knuckles. Despite her slight handicap, Thumbelina tears around her foster home like any puppy and as if nothing was wrong. Thumbelina is a dear little girl. She is cat safe, loves the older female Greyhound in her foster home, and has really come out of her shell from how she was when she arrived. Thumbelina is joyful, eager to explore the world, and very precious. She needs an equally special home where she will be loved and cherished.
