Left abandoned at a rural county animal control shelter, there wasn't much we knew about Maui. Fortunately, somebody at Atlanta Lab Rescue was able to recognize a diamond in the rough with Maui (or Maui Jim as he is formally known as) and rescued him.

Left abandoned at a rural county animal control shelter, there wasn't much we knew about Maui. Fortunately, somebody at Atlanta Lab Rescue was able to recognize a diamond in the rough with Maui (or Maui Jim as he is formally known as) and rescued him.

Maui is approximately (4/5 years old ?), but has the heart of a much younger pure black lab.

He makes for a great companion, as he does not expect a lot of from his owners, but yet returns all the love back that he possibly can. He is fully house, crate and leashed trained, which makes him an ideal dog to adopt.

Once Maui was transported by Atlanta Lab Rescue, he was was boarded at this great facility that allowed him to be play during the day with other dogs and to run around.

As his foster parent who is normally only used to younger labs and pups, I wasn't sure what to expect from an older dog, but I was pleasantly surprised. He did surprise me in many ways. First off, I have to admit that the idea of not having to crate train or house-train a dog is a blessing. And I'm proud to say, that since I picked up Maui, there has never been one accident inside the house, even though he is very rarely in his crate.

For a mature dog, he's outgrown all the puppy antics, but he definitely still has some play left in him. I take him to the dog park with friends a few nights a week and we have a great time running around free and playing with the same 4 other dogs that we meet up with. Fortunately, Maui does not have one aggressive bone in his body... and he only likes to have fun with other people and other dogs. He enjoys running around with the other dogs and playing fetch until he wears himself out.

Indoors, Maui is very much a chill type of dog... he'll always try to lay near you, but is very content just laying around and relaxing until it's his next time to go outside and play.

Since I live in a apartment, the one thing I love about Maui - is that he is not a barker. He doesn't get rattled by any odd noises and sleeps well during the night. As for sleeping, he takes turns from sleeping in his crate and on my bed with me.

Who ever had Maui before, definitely trained him. Maui will not get up on the furniture, even if you try to persuade him. So instead, I find myself sitting and laying on the floor to accommodate him in order for us to snuggle up together or to watch a movie.

On the leash, Maui is just as good. He's pretty much full grown at 78lbs and shouldn't get any bigger. He tends to follow you as opposed to dragging you. Though he does have frequent visits to the bushes so he can 'mark' his territory. Which results in us stopping about every 100 feet :)

Once inside the house, unless you provoke him to play, Maui is very content just laying around and not getting in your way. He has very few demands... all he wants is to be shown some love and attention from his owner.

Maui would make a great additional pet if you already have another dog, or would be equally as content being the sole dog in the home. He's a people person, so if you have kids or other adults, he'll just be that much happier taking turns hanging around with each of the family members.

As for the car, he is great. He actually recognizes my car and will walk towards it if we are near it. He will climb right in the back seat, lay down and make himself comfortable for whatever trip you are planning.
