My Story: Imagine life without your eyes. Would you be scared? Confused? Angry? These are feelings I know well. My name is Aunt Bea, and I was dumped in the parking lot of the Clark County Humane Society on a late May night. I would either have to fend for myself or rely on strangers to help make a brand new life for me. For possibly the first time in my three years of life, an angel was by my side. It was Thursday morning, May 27th and some CCHS staff members were coming into the shelter to help care for the hundred or so animals that are looking for new homes. They came across my carrier in the parking lot. The door had been left open, and I was desperately trying to keep my four kittens close to me. They were a month old at the time and started to wobble out and explore. I was frantic to keep them with me. The staff members worked quickly and secured us all back in the carrier and my new life began. The staff members were shocked and horrified when they saw the condition of my eyes. I literally, have no eye balls, just empty sockets that get infected easily causing puss and fluid to build up and run out. I cant tell them when the injury occurred, or even if it was something I was born with. The veterinarian couldnt tell for sure if it was a birth defect, the result of a disease, or if something horrendous happened and they were dug out. It appeared to be an old injury, as I wasnt in any pain. All they knew was that I needed help. They started me and my kittens on antibiotics. We all had upper respiratory and eye infections. My empty eyes were causing me problems and my kittens healthy eyes were not doing so well. We responded to the medication and my kittens are now thriving. I was such a good Mom, everyone told me so. Sadly, we have been separated because they are big enough to live on their own. They are up for adoption now, and Im hoping they get a wonderful home of their own. As for me, I have a long road ahead of me. On July 12th, I will be going in for surgery. They are going to clean out whats left of my eye socket, so that infection will no longer set in. As a final step, they are going to sew my eyes shut in an effort to keep dirt and other particles out of the sockets. It sounds harsh, but Ill be so much better off. I hear the surgery is going to cost a lot of money, but the people here are committed to giving me a bright future. After the surgery, I will be going into foster care for a few weeks, and then Ill be available for adoption. No longer will I be scared, confused, or angry. If you would like to help out with the cost of my surgery, or even better, giving me the home I deserve, please contact the shelter. My personality is wonderful, considering all Ive been through. Talk to me a little bit, let me smell your hand, and Ill be your best friend. I love to cuddle and rub. Ill put my trust completely in you. I know there are a lot of good people in this world that can help with my medical expenses and a very special person that can give me a happy new life.
