9/14 Update: Jackson is ready for his forever home. Yesterday for the first time he gave us kisses and it wasnt food motivated. Hes learned the house routine and thrives on all things being in order. Hes so good in his crate and occasionally goes there to rest. Were working on his recall he knows his name but is hesitant to come when called.
Outside hes got a lot of energy but he does calm himself down very well. Hes too good to lie on the concrete pool deck, instead he establishes himself on a chaise lounge. Hes upgraded from playing splash in the pool to jumping in and swimming around. Not sure hed ever been around water before but he likes it.
Also we missed a Kodak moment when a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly landed on his nose and stayed there for about 30 seconds. His eyes were huge as he tried to stare at the butterfly moving its wings on his nose. Hes such a gentle guy he just watched and didnt freak out or try to remove him from his nose.
Ive used a longer lead with him and so Im working with him on a shorter leash for better walking behaviors. Hes pretty good at learning things, and once hes done them hes not so shy about them. Jackson would do best in a home with other dogs, but he has progressed so much with people that placed with the right family willing to work with him hed be okay there too.
8/5 Update Jackson has been in foster for 10 weeks now and his really cool personality is shining ! Jackson loves dogs but was shy around people when he entered foster. Now he stays in the room when strangers arrive, and he approaches then on his own and has even wanted them to pet him. Hes now housebroken and has full access to our house. During the day he prefers to hang out with me in my office, occasionally playing with a squishy toy or bone. At night he hangs out with us in the family room and has started to lie down right next to us for better petting access. Jackson has learned new commands, he crates and sits on command. Were still working on come and recall with him. Hes not let loose outside because we dont trust him with that yet. On walks he loves meeting other dogs and has really improved his reading other dogs behaviors. Jackson does okay with our 13 year old, but he does not like being chased down so he would do best with older kids in the home. Jackson sleeps in his crate at night and hes quite content and doesnt bark or cry. Jackson is young, so he has puppy behaviors and does need further training. Jackson is a mix but his BC traits are there - he stalks our other dogs and then pounces. His BC leg feather and neck rough are just starting to grow in. Hes smart, he picks up on things and adjusts his behaviors accordingly. If I go back to my office after hes been fed, he directs me back downstairs and wants me to stop working. Its hard to resist the paw on my knee and his face begging me to leave work for the day. ************************************************** Jackson loves other dogs, we have two mature male BCs and he loves to be around them. Humans he was not so sure about.
That was the end of May, and Im happy to say that he now approaches people on his own now, yesterday came up to me for petting and attention, a first! He also went up to Jim, but then Jim had food and Jackson is very food motivated...
Jackson is very gentle and quite submissive, hes not shown any negatives with people or dogs. Hes young so he likes to play and hell do the crazy zoomies around the house to spend energy.
Jackson's doing very well with his housebreaking and hes been accident free for a week now. He has learned his name and responds when its called. We are working on on basic skills and recall. Jackson has not shown a tendency to herd, but he loves to dig in the yard. If left to his own devices hed have the mulch around every tree on our property dug up and he tries to eat any bugs he finds. Hes let me trim his nails without too much fuss as well has brush him regularly.
One thing to note, he does still shy when a hand reaches for his head or his collar. If we touch his back first and move forward hes okay, he just doesnt like to think someone is going to grab his collar. Weve kept a leash on him in the house so we reach for that if needed rather than his neck area. Weve exposed him to strangers visiting the house and yesterday he went up to our visitor and sniffed them rather than going to his crate which is great progress.
Hes still got a long way to go, but he seems happy and hes making progress. Someone looking for a low drive BC mix that has other canines would be a target environment for him. I would not recommend him to a home that does not have other dogs. We dont have cats so hes not been cat tested, but hes at peace with our 13 yr. old daughter.
Heres to progress!
Please read our procedures prior to making inquiry regarding this dog.
Please go to our main website at www.mabcr.org for more information regarding the adoption of this or any dog from our rescue.
Please note that while this dog is currently available, any dog on our site may have an adoption pending and may not be available to you at this time. The same dog may later become available if the adoption falls through.
Our website www.mabcr.org will give you details on our adoption procedures as well as an application for adoption. An application must be submitted prior to 'matching' an adopter with a dog as all dogs do not fit into all homes. We pride ourselves in our adoption process, we take the time to get to know our adopters so that we can place a dog with them that they can enjoy for years to come.
Please understand that we will not discuss dogs with individual adopters until after the application process is completed.
Our rescue does not have a public facility, therefore there are no visiting hours. Appointments to visit with the available dogs are made after the application process has been completed by our staff.
To assist any dog within the MABCR organization, please consider making a donation to the general fund or to the medical fund. All dogs coming into our rescue are fully vetted (s/n and innoculations) prior to adoption.
Rescuing animals is quite expensive. If you are unable to adopt, but would like to help this, or any other animal in our system, please consider a sponsorship donation.
For information on our sponsorship program, please contact Sarah at SLR@mabcr.org.
