American Staffordshire Terrier/Pit Bull Terrier Mix: An adopted dog in Eastern Passage, NS

Brew is approximately 60lbs and possibly around 2 years old, he is up to date on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped. Brew does have mild allergies which are currently being maintained by a specific hypoallergenic dog food, and a low dose of steroids recommended by his veterinarian. Brew was found running at large in the Halifax area, with no collars or tags, he appeared to have very little socialization/training. He has been with ADR since May 2010.

Brew is a very strong and athletic dog who would make a wonderful jogging partner for an experienced owner. He has a very mellow attitude in the house and knows commands such as sit, down, off, paw, touch, play dead and go to your bed. Brew is also crate trained. He loves to learn new things and does so very quickly. Brew completed obedience classes with Sublime Canine Services in HRM and is now working on some basic agility with his foster mom.

He walks well on leash with an easy walk harness. His foster mom thinks that he would be great at agility activities and would love to find a home for him where his owner would have the time and resources to take him to agility training.

Brew tends to ignore children when on walks or show them very little interest. He has had some experience with older children (5 & up) who are dog savvy and has done wonderful with them. He does play rather rough and because of this we would recommend no young children as he may knock them over with his exuberance.

Other dogs get Brew worked up sometimes, his foster mom has been working diligently with making these experiences positive for Brew. This is an area that will need to be patiently worked on once Brew is settled in his new home also. This is also why we would like to find Brew a home where he will be an 'only dog'. Or with a mellow/calm personality to help balance Brew's energy/personality. Dog parks or other off-leash areas are a no-go for this big fella.

Brew has only met a handful of cats from a distance during his time in foster care. He has always been kept under control during these times and appeared scared or nervous of the cats he met (after some growled/hissed at him). It would probably be best if he went to a home without cats or perhaps one with dog friendly cats and willing to work with Brew during introductions.

Brew has a great personality and would be a wonderful addition to a household. He adds comic relief to the lives around him and loves just about everyone he meets. With a lot of love and consistent training, he will be a wonderful pet.

The adopting family will be required to complete positive reinforcement obedience classes with this dog.
