Meet Boone

New Foster Update: Boone has been moved into a new foster home:

He’s an interesting character in the car, but he did settle down and stop carrying on. He did great in the house. Zero accidents (hoping I didn’t just jinx myself) and great recall. He fits in great with our two, and Boone & Laddie even played a bit.

He’s smart Sarah, you were right. He’s figured out that I leave a window blind up by my office desk so he gets under the desk, on all the cords, to look out the window and try and see cars. He listens very well though when I remind him it’s off limits there.

Also – he really seeks out attention from humans. He lifts up our hands to get them on his head to get petted. He does beg to get out into our garage because he knows the cars are there. (Boone adores riding in cars) So we only open the garage door after the door to the house is closed and Boone’s on the correct side of the door.

Foster update: 23 September

Just dropping off the latest update on Boone, plus a little bit of info i forgot to mention before. Our house is a VERY toy friendly environment so there are constantly squeeky toys and tug ropes and tennis balls under every sofa chair and dresser. Boone love love loves to play with toys. Most of his playtime is with our other dogs from sun up to sun down but when they are all inside we've taken Boone outside and played ball with him, without any training he retrieves balls without hesitation. He also settles well when the other dogs are willing to settle down and rest. He has a nice balance of desire to play constantly and being able to hit the "off" switch and relax when it's appropriate. He's very sweet and loves to snuggle, which is wonderful because when he first came to MABCR he didn't really understand the concept of human affection, but he now adores people!!!

On the subject of his love for car chasing we continue to work on teaching him to be calm and sit when cars are passing by. just 2 days ago i was outside working in the yard (outside of the fence) and a few cars drove by, Boone barked at them, and from the other side of the fence I told him to sit, he hesitated as another car drove by but did sit without fussing at it. A small step but one in the right direction, and we'll continue to work from the house on cars passing by during daily routine activities.

Can't wait to see him in a loving home, he surly will make a wonderfully sweet and playful companion for a special family!!!

Foster Update: 13 September

Boone did pretty well this weekend with learning to stay calm and not bark or lunge at oncoming cars. Treats and distraction didn't help but i found the best thing was sitting with him on the sidewalk and petting him when he was calm, if he started going crazy i'd tell him to sit, once he sat quietly I would pet him. This seemed to calm him down, after a few minutes i could stand and pet once in a while and he just watched as they passed but much calmer, not pulling on his leash just sitting nicely. I did challenge him at Cross St and Washington Ave traffic light, it only took a few moments for him to realize that I was in control and he sat calmly after being told to sit a few times. We made it through one full cycle of the lights before crossing and going to the car. In the car he seemed to respond to "sit" very well again. It seems that while standing he feels he can do whatever his little heart desires but while being told to sit he follows the command and just watches them pass nicely. We'll keep working!

Foster Update: 19 August 2010

Boone been here for almost 2 weeks now with us and he really is a joy to have around, he listens very well, sometimes i swear he understand full sentences and does whatever he's asked. He LOVES to play with mav, they're a riot together the way they wrestle and run laps around the yard. He appears to be house broken but we did have one accident, he hasn't figured out the doggie door, so sometimes you have to remind him to go out.

Boone has one great love and that's cars.... wether it's riding in them or chasing them they definitely own his heart so we have to be a little cautious to make sure he doesn't get out of the yard or house without a leash. He walks well on a leash sometimes he pulls a little bit with a few corrections he calms down quickly.

I think that Boone would LOVE to have a running partner he has a ton and a half of energy and runs as much as mav will let him run outside (and you know mav he could run for days) he has a nice pace when he runs and definitely has the energy for daily runs with his person. He’s very affectionate towards us and mav, he is very gentle when the time is appropriate and very wild when it's time to play, he seems to have a nice balance of the two traits.

*******************************************************
Boone is a border collie who is ready to rock and roll with the human interested in bonding and training.

My best guess is that Boone was tied out for most of his young life (we guess him at 1.5 to 2 years) and has little focus. He is sweet with people and dogs, and so far has shown little interest with cats, however, he lacks the focus of a dog who has been handled alot. That is the bad news. The good news is that with little effort, Boone is beginning to focus and realise that humans are pretty awesome!

Boone walks well on leash, is crate trained, and is ready and open to learn about life. He will do best in a home with the time to train and take him to classes, as well as to exercise his body, and baby brain. Boone is a quick study, it only took two days for him to understand that he could jump into his crate instead of being lifted. Now he does it without my asking, just with a hand signal!

Boone currently needs a reasonable amount of exercise. Running and hiking would suit this guy, as would agility and obedience.

Boone should not be kenneled or tied in his future life, as he reverts to default behavior...barking and jumping. Anyone interested in adopting Boone, should be prepared to leash walk, crate, and supervise if inside a fenced area for some time until Boone has grown into the great companion dog he is destined to be.

Today's discovery...Boone loves water...today's lesson..."wait"...Boone decided jumping into the crate before the door was open was a good thing! So, we worked a bit on "wait".

UPDATE: 17 May -- "Booneroo" is coming along very nicely. He now asks for affections, and will greet humans as they approach him. I expect that his social development will continue to move along exponentially and the human willing to invest the time will be one lucky dog!

UPDATE: 30 May. Boone is coming along so nicely. Far faster than I could have predicted. Boone is now wanting affection, and yesterday, rolled over to ask for belly rubs! He knows a sweet thing when he has it!

Rescuing animals is quite expensive. If you are unable to adopt, but would like to help this, or any other animal in our system, please consider a sponsorship donation.
For information on our sponsorship program, please contact Sarah at SLR@mabcr.org.
Please go to our main website at www.mabcr.org for more information regarding the adoption of this or any dog from our rescue.

Please note that while this dog is currently available, any dog on our site may have an adoption pending and may not be available to you at this time. The same dog may later become available if the adoption falls through.

Our website www.mabcr.org will give you details on our adoption procedures as well as an application for adoption. An application must be submitted prior to 'matching' an adopter with a dog as all dogs do not fit into all homes. We pride ourselves in our adoption process, we take the time to get to know our adopters so that we can place a dog with them that they can enjoy for years to come.

Please understand that we will not discuss dogs with individual adopters until after the application process is completed.

Our rescue does not have a public facility, therefore there are no visiting hours. Appointments to visit with the available dogs are made after the application process has been completed by our staff.

To assist any dog within the MABCR organization, please consider making a donation to the general fund or to the medical fund. All dogs coming into our rescue are fully vetted (s/n and innoculations) prior to adoption.
