Candy Lou is looking for YOU!
Hi Everyone, my name is Candy and I was lucky enough to find my way to Brookline Lab Rescue after living my first 7.5 years as a breeding dog in a lonely kennel. I had limited vet care but, since I came into Brookline I am turning into on taken care of and pampered girl!
I came to my foster home on New Years Eve, 12/31/09! I live with 2 furry foster brothers and a furry foster sister! They are all chocolate labs just like me....guess you can see my foster mom's weakness! I get along great with all of them and even the neighbor's dog even if he is a yellow lab, not a chocolate. I am actually quite smitten with him and my foster mom teases me that he is my boyfriend! While I am living with these other dogs and get to play with my boyfriend I do have one little personality quirk that I have to tell you about. It really isn't bad but, my foster mom says if I am going to tell people about me I have to tell the truth! When I meet other doggies, in particular large dogs or labs, I give them a little grumble. It isn't much and I don't lift my lips or hackles. My foster mom tells me to stop and I do. Once all the checking out an sniffing is done I am a-ok! See since I was used for breeding I don't like the big guys thinking they can, well you know...............After about 3 grumblies I am done! My foster mom doesn't quite know how I would be living with a cat but, let me tell you that I like to chase furry little creatures!
My foster mom let's me have run of the house while she is away. I don't mess in the house or destroy anything. I dont go on the furniture too much, only when my mom leaves for work I will hop up on the couch and watch her. Sometimes I will do this when she is home too but, the other dogs taught me that. My foster mom sometimes does catch me sleeping on the couch when she comes home from work! Sometimes I will sleep on the dog bed in the living room, in my foster brothers crate or my foster moms bedroom floor. See I probably would get on her bed but, it is too high. I am not much of a bother for my foster mom. I like to follow her around and when she is sitting in her recliner I like to lie on the floor aside of her most of the time I am not too pesky. I am definitely a peoples dog and would like a new family that likes to have me hanging around with them.
Right now I eat 2 times a day! I was a big girl rounding out close to 100 lbs. when I came to live with my foster mom but, now she says I look perfect! My foster mom calls me a bull in a china shop. See I never lived in a house where I had to navigate around people and sometimes I bump into my mom or stand at the wrong side of the door and get in the way. I also think that if there is something in someones hand it is supposed to go in my mouth! My foster mom is used to us crazy labs and she usually isnt walking around with stuff in her hands anyway! But, I might take advantage of little ones! I also like to sit and beg from my foster mom when she sits in her recliner and eats something. But, again my foster mom usually doesnt do this as she is used to sitting at her counter to eat, because she has a bad boy who steals off the counter, glad I don't do that! She also doesnt have trash available for the pickens but, I think I probably would take advantage of that if it was available! I have taken a few obedience classes with my foster mom but, would definitely benefit from taking a class with my new family. I can sit and lay down pretty reliably. I come when called in the house or yard but, haven't practiced much of that outside of the yard and well when we go for walks I am easily distracted! I need to learn my leash manners as well. My foster mom walks me on a no-pull harness but, I can still pull like a champ!
My health! Overall I am a pretty healthy gal considering where I came from. When my foster mom picked my up I was so dirty my lovely coat looked like I was milk chocolate but, after a much needed bath I am a deep dark chocolate lady! I have been brought up to date on all of my vaccines and spayed. I do have one thing that is going to be something ongoing for my new owner. I have old knees. Yes, arthritis has set into my back knees. I had an injury a while back that my old owner didnt have checked so I got arthritis. I get around really well but, I have to be careful on slick surfaces like a crate pan, hardwood floors or ice. So my foster mom has some area rugs around the corners so I dont spin out. The things my new family will need to do are exercise, supplements and possibly pain meds from time to time. She also is giving my Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements to help lubricate my joints. My new family will need to exercise me regularly and make sure I don't carry around any extra weight. I met a really nice orthopedic surgeon and she said I didn't need surgery. Just pain management medicine when needed, G&C supplements, maybe some physical therapy or even acupuncture but, right now I don't need anything other than the G&C. My foster mom can tell you a really cheap way to order that!
So in a nutshell I am in search of a family to teach me basic manners, although my manners are not bad and my foster mom and I have been working on them, someone who will keep me slim and trim so my knees continue to do well, and most of all someone who will LOVE ME, LOVE ME, LOVE ME!!
