Meet LOLA - BLIND

This baby is one of four purebred Dachshunds that were rescued from an Amish puppy mill breeder. The breeder who obviously knew nothing about correct breeding bred 2 Dapples together. For reasons unknown, the combination of two dapple genes hitting the same area of the dog can be lethal. I have seen double dapple puppies born with no eyes, and/or no ears. Blindness and/or deafness is also caused by the double dapple gene. The condition causing the eyes to be very small or not there at all is called micropthalmia. Affected dogs have prominent third eyelids and small eyes which appear recessed in the eye socket (enophthalmos). A defect early in development results in the smaller than normal eye (microphthalmia). This is often associated with other eye abnormalities, including defects of the cornea, anterior chamber, lens and/or retina. Microphthalmia is also seen with coloboma - a cleft in a portion of the eye, particularly the iris.
Microphthalmia with multiple defects (ocular dysgenesis) is often seen in dogs with a merle hair coat with excessive amounts of white. The eyes are commonly different colours. Partial deafness may also be part of this syndrome. These dogs are frequently blind.
This baby was born December 11, 2009. Because of her condition her destiny was a rain barrel. Yes that is how dogs are put to sleep on most Amish puppy mill farms. I cannot imagine this soft cuddly warm loving pup thrown into a ice water rain barrel to die. Surrounded by darkness from his missing eyes and never knowing a loving touch except for her mother whom she would briefly know before being torn away from her warm love. This most innocent soul was somehow spared the horror and found her way to Saint Francis Animal Sanctuary on a cold March night.I had to pay the Amish man $25.00 for each pup to save their lives. Right or wrong for paying him they would have died. I sat on the floor rocking and touching these babies until 4:00 AM the night they came here. They are truly the most innocent animals I have ever held. They do not know what sight is as they basically have no eyes. I cannot tell if they are deaf yet. Here is what it takes to adopt one of these babies. Go to the web site and fill out an application and send to mparke11@aol.com . This is the process we are going to follow to make sure these babies get the best home for the rest of their lives. The adoption fee is $200.00 and here is what is included. Spay and or neuter at our vet clinic in Avon Lake Ohio when they are old enough (another month ) Rabies / DA2PPv / Bordetella (kennel cough) Nemex -2 puppy wormer and micro chipping.
