Meet Maverick

Maverick is my name and loving is my game! I am almost a 9 year old (my birthday is on Valentines day!) black lab mix weighing in at 53lbs. My shots are all up to date and I am neutered. My vet thinks I am a beagle mix which explains my wonderful red/brown coloring mixed with my lab colors; as well as my soft whine when I’m talking to you!
I lost my first home because my family could not take care of me any more, and at my last home, I loved my family too but with a new baby on the way they felt they had to give me up. I was very sad to leave them but I settled in and made new friends with my foster family really fast. I live with my foster mum, dad and two human sistersin Berlin, NJ right now. One girl is 9, the same age as me, and the other girl is 7. I love my big kids.

I am totally a people person and if you are looking for a companion who will always be by your side, I am your guy! You can call me a ‘velcro’ dog and I follow my foster mum everywhere. I like to be pet lots but if she is working I will just lay and keep her company. At night I like to sleep on a blanket by the side of her bed and I will stay there all night long protecting her. I love to be loved. I sooo want to snuggle on the couch with my mum in the evenings…so far that has been a no go but I keep fluttering my big Puppy dogs eyes and trying. I tried the couch once but that was a “no, no” I jumped down like a good boy and I stay off the furniture. (At least when they are not looking!!!)

My foster sisters love to pet me and play hide and seek with me. This is a new game I just learned and I love it. I sit and stay while they go hide and then I find them. I am a very fast learner and very smart. I even sit and stay at the other side of the kitchen while they put my food down and only come when they call me for it!

Since I’m 9, I like to relax and have some quiet time on my bed at times and don’t like to be disturbed while I am sleeping. I like to wake up on my own instead of being woken up, or else I get a little startled.

I am COMPLETELY house broken. I am such a good boy in the house while you’re gone that you wouldn’t even think I had moved from my bed, and never have accidents in the house. My human sisters leave their toys all over the play room floor and I don’t even touch them. When I run out in to the yard I just do my business and come right back in, no standing out in the cold waiting for me. Quick & easy! I will bark or whine a little by the door to let you know its time to go out. I love to go for walks especially in the woods where there are lots of smells and squirrels. I tug a little hard on my leash when I see squirrels, other people and dogs and I get excited.
I have had female doggie companions in the past but in my last home I was the only dog and so I would need proper introductions to other female dogs in your home to make sure we all got along. I like to be the leader of the pack, so the other Male dogs dont like me so much. I like to show them I am boss. SO I would be better with ladies!

A few years ago I had some allergy tests done, my skin was all itchy, dry and sore. Turns out I am allergic to grains and corn, so I am on a grain free diet. That food is just as yummy & easy to come by & I love the salmon flavor. I love my food and am totally food driven. I will do anything for a good grain free snack. Sit, stay, speak & sort of roll over! But I NEVER touch my family’s food! I might sniff around the table and clean up a few crumbs off the floor but if you tell me to go lay down while you are eating I will lay and wait until you are done before I get up and help you sweep the floor! My Foster mum even left cookies on the counter while she was gone and I didn’t touch them. I’m such a good boy!

I like riding in the car. I sometimes struggle to get in the back so I may need some help at times but once in I sit nicely on a blanket. I occasionally whine a little but that is usually cause I KNOW we are going for a walk soon!

I am a good mix of energetic and calm. I have my mad 5 mins in the house where I want to run around and around and play with some toys. I only play with toys when the mood strikes me, but when it does boy do I play. My foster family is working on this with me and I am getting better at play time. I like to bark a little when it is play time, that’s how I get their attention. I can get a little frisky at certain times of the day and when I am playing but if you tell me to go lay down I will settle.

I love sunny days and laying in the sun streaming thru the window. I am not so keen on that white stuff that falls from the sky, it makes my feet cold and wet and I will only stay in it for as long as I need too! I don’t like the noise from thunder storms or fireworks either but I will totally take the sound of a vacuum and will follow you around while you clean house.

It would be so cool to have a new furever home and spend the best years of my life with you. I still have lots of loving to give & many hours of play time. Currently in NJ
