Meet Sammy (FKA Alisander)

Sammy is a very sweet dog who just turned 4 years old, weighs 60 pounds, and what a charmer he is! He is extremely food motivated. The saying, “a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” definitely applies to Sammy! He prefers woman to men but he is currently living with a 22 year old male and three women and after lots of patience by the male, Sammy absolutely adores him. He also resides with two female dogs and although he gets along with both of them, he seems to be quite smitten with the beagle. When it is time for their walk, if the foster mom does not pick up the end of both leashes quick enough for Sammy, he will pick up the handle end of the leashes and walk towards the door. He is fully housetrained, sleeps in his crate at night and does fairly well on a leash. His favorite past times are squeaking his toys, emptying the bucket of tennis balls or snuggling on the couch (he thinks he is a lap dog). He should not be in a home with cats as he plays too rough with them but he is sharing a home with two rabbits who are kept in cages and he is not interested in them. The portrait of Sammy in this biography was prepared by Laura Grover, a local Portland artist, who will donate Sammy's portrait to his adopter (Laura can be contacted through www.lgroverdesign.com).

In October of 2012, Sammy was the recipient of a Canine Good Citizen certification! He loves to play ball, cuddle and learn new tricks. Not only can he sit, lay down, give you his paw, roll over, jump on a chair and sit, he has learned how to howl on cue! Sammy is smart, eager to please and food motivated, making him easy to train. He gets to go on trips to the pet food store and rides beautifully in a car. Sammy is also crate trained and house trained.

Background History: Sammy was originally adopted in March of 2010 as a puppy and was returned to AHR because he was to reactive to new men coming to the home (working staff and construction workers). Sammy was evaluated by KT O-Shea at Positive Canine Care and was found to have a wonderful personality. He stayed in her home with other dogs and her male partner. She reported that Sammy is usually a fairly calm dog for his age with the appropriate exercise and has spirits of high excitement. He is incredibly smart and would make a great agility dog. She taught him how to "roll over" in about 30 seconds! He initially came into the home and play bowed toward her more active dog, and they soon became best friends. Within a day, and after several treats from her boyfriend, Sammy became friends with him as well. Sammy’s video of desensitizing training can be seen on Positive Canine Care's Facebook Page posted on Aug 2nd. www.facebook.com/positivecaninecare

Sammy may also have been overly sensitive to an underground fencing system, and we suggest that this not be used in his new home.

He was a Christmas Eve baby, born 12/24/09.
