Opal is a gem of a girl, a 25-lb package of cuteness and affection.  This  5-year-old Cocker Spaniel was rescued from a South Carolina puppy mill where she was unable to enjoy a normal dog’s life: cramped quarters, no walks, no dog parks, not even her own comfy bed. Since arriving in DC, however, things are looking up. Her foster mom has her on an exercise regimen and she is toning up and regaining her girlish figure. Reluctant at first, and scandalized by the DC snow, this Southern girl quickly mastered walking gently on a leash  and now looks forward to those walks. In fact, this mannerly little lady has so many nice qualities. She's good with cats and fine with low-key dogs, doesn't jump on the furniture, and doesn't bark excessively. When she's not busy playing with her dog and cat foster siblings, Opal enjoys spending time gazing lovingly at her foster family with those big brown eyes. She’d be a calm and loving companion for a relaxed lifestyle, asking only access to a backyard,  regular easy walks, and a little brushing of her beautiful wavy coat.  Calm and gentle, not TOOOO BIG and not TOOOO SMALL, she might be JUSSST RIGHT for a family with younger children a first time dog owner, or any dog lover looking for a loyal but undemanding friend for life.


Since Opal did not receive proper nutrition or vet care, she is missing some upper teeth which she doesn't seem to perceive as a limitation. Her adopter will have to follow up with a vet as to proper dental care to keep her in good health and smiling broadly.

Like most shelter dogs, Opal may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained.
