Keeshond: An adoptable dog in Manhattan Beach, CA

Kensi is yet another Keeshond who is fortunate to be in the care of a rescue organization. Kensi's elderly owner could no longer care for her and a caregiver surrendered Kensi to an animal shelter. Kensi had suffered from extreme neglect, she was obese, and she had numerous crusts and scales on her skin. Kensi's coat was clipped by the shelter's groomer for medical reasons. When we accepted Kensi into our rescue program, she received a wellness examination that revealed she was anemic and her thyroid level was very low. Other abnormalities included an elevated kidney value, cholesterol, and white blood cell count. Her urinalysis showed marked bacteria and a low urine specific gravity. High cholesterol and anemia are classic symptoms of hypothyroidism. Radiographs and urine culture were performed and an unusual finding was discovered--Kensi had an entire bladder filled with bladder stones and both kidneys were filled with stones! Due to risks associated with kidney surgery, our veterinarian opted to put Kensi on a stone dissolving diet called Science Diet S/D. Kensi's urine cultured positive for two different bacteria. Thanks to the dedication of her foster family, Kensi is doing very well with her special diet to dissolve stones and antibiotics to manage infection. Due to the extent of neglect, it may take a while longer to dissolve all the stones. Our veterinarian continues to evaluate Kensi at regular intervals and radiographs are taken to monitor her progress. We are very pleased with Kensi's progress!!
