My name is Grayson. When I first arrived at the shelter I was so outgoing and happy, everyone thought I'd be adopted right away. So did I. I was perfect -- young, good looking, friendly with people and other cats, playful, affectionate -- what's not to love?! Adopters passed me by thinking someone else would adopt me and, even if they didn't, they thought I seemed happy enough living in the shelter. Weeks turned into months, months turned into years: 1.5 years to be exact. I was one year old when I came to the shelter, so I've spent over half my life here.
At the beginning I was enthusiastic about everything. If someone petted me, I'd push my head into their hand and give them a hearty headbutt. I was very mellow and got along with everyone. But then one of the cats in the main room started picking on me, so they moved me to a smaller room. It was less stressful, but soon it got boring.

The volunteers tried to make my life more interesting. They'd shine a laser light on the wall and I was on it. Hey, where'd it go? It was there a second ago! And watch this movie of me attacking the videocam strap. Got it! It was ok when I was playing, but the rest of the time there wasn't much to do. I'd hang out with Prince. We had a good father:son relationship. As time passed, I got more and more lethargic and I hardly played at all. They brought me to the vet for a checkup and everything was ok. I was just sad that I didn't have a home.
Since there was a new mix of cats in the main room, they moved me back and I felt a renewed passion for life. There was lots more space to run around, more cats to play with and I made some new friends, like Bob. Sometimes it gets a little crazy. New cats come in and want to prove they're the boss. So if I give you a swat by mistake, please don't take it personally. Ooops! I didnt know it was you!
So, that's my story so far. It's only the beginning. The real story will begin when someone makes me a part of their family.
GRAYSONS BLOG:
Thanks, Prince, for letting Baby and me take over your blog. You are one cool guy who taught me the finer points of being a cat. You were the perfect role model and I will try to make you proud.
4/2/10 -- Here is where I live. You can see it's a huge room. Everyone just finished breakfast and was napping so there wasn't much activity going on. That's Baby on the top of the tower. She is so pretty!! Congratulations to Bob. He only arrived at the shelter last month and he's going home soon. I'll have to ask him for some tips on what he did to find a family so quickly. 4/7 -- You've got to read Prince's Happy Tails story! Wow!! He's got the perfect home. Hey, Prince, looks like you're getting spoiled sleeping on that soft human bed. Glad to see you've made some new friends but haven't forgotten about us back at the shelter. Thanks for your encouragement. You deserved the best home ever and it looks like you got it! 4/11 -- Sometimes when adopters visit, I'm sleeping. But that's not all that I do. Here I am jumping up to the top of a cage. Ok, I confess -- I was actually headed to a quiet sleeping spot. But later in the day, they brought out my favorite toy: da bird. Watch how good I am at catching it! That was fun! Then Blake joined in. He caught it and carried it off. Game over!! Good job, Blake. I'm only 2.5 years old -- really just a kid -- so I've got lots of play left in me. We could have so much fun together. All I need is someone to give me a chance. 4/17 -- Well, today wasn't a day like all the rest. This morning they packed me into a carrier and took me to the NW Pet Fair. I didn't know if I was going to the vet or going home (I wish!). I spent the morning in a cage trying to find someone who wanted to adopt me. I guess they're doing everything they can to find a family for me. 4/24 -- First the gossip. It's all good news. Benny and Blake, one year old brothers who lived their entire lives at the shelter, went home today. Baby, who was the longest resident, was finally adopted as well. Yay, Baby! Enjoy your retirement!! Of course, now that Baby is gone, that means I have been here the longest. Pretty sad, isn't it. Baby turned her blog over to Mitzi, a beautiful lady who isn't coping very well. We all hope she will win someone's heart soon.
My blogger thought you might like to see more videos of me. Here I am trying to enjoy some quiet time. That's not easy! When she finally gave up trying to coax me out of my cubby hole and turned off the videocam, I stretched, pretended I didn't see her and walked right past. Hahaha. Cats -- you've got to love us, right? Then I moved to the top of one of the cages but she followed me. She seemed happier once I let her pet me. I gotta admit it felt good, but it's more fun to make her work for it. Hahaha. More cat humor. 5/1 -- I was active today, jumping up on counters and climbing the cat tower, running around playing. It was a fun day. Then I saw something. Yes! Cat treats!! They sure know how to get my attention. 5/2 -- I got a nice email and photos from Charlie's mom in Manhattan. Thanks for reading my blog. Charlie sure is a handsome cat. He looks just like me! 5/8 -- Last week some teenage students were volunteering and they visited the main room where I live. The first group came in, threw a toy mouse, and I chased it. Then another group came in and we did the same thing. And then another group!. They were nice kids. I hope they had as much fun as I did. Thanks for visiting! You brightened my day.
There's a new young kitty named April and we had lots of fun playing. That girl has unlimited energy. Then I played hide and seek with a string toy. As you can see, I'm a lot faster than the person taking the video!
My BFF, Prince, sent another Happy Tails update. Hey, Prince, would you please check to see if your new parents could squeeze in one more cat. I don't take up much room and I know I'd like your new friends. It looks like Ziggy loves you as much as I do. Thanks for the update. It gives us hope that there is a perfect home out there for each of us. 5/13 -- I just noticed that Prince has been entered in the Kiss Loneliness Goodbye! contest. Good luck, Prince. I voted for you!
Animal Aid sure could use the money if any of you can afford a donation. It's not cheap to feed us all -- and you can imagine what the vet bills are like! Whew! Vote for your favorite rescue story by clicking here. 5/15 -- If I'm dreaming, don't wake me up! Prince sent me an email that he's working on his parents to see if they might adopt me! Honest! He said I should ask the adoption counselor if it's ok. I could be going home at the end of the month!!! I'll get to meet cuddly little Ziggy, beautiful Claire, friendly Grommet, and the big black dogs. And I'll have a loving and understanding mom and dad! Woohoo! It's been a really long time since I've had a home, so hopefully everyone will be patient with me while I learn the house rules.
Prince, as happy as I was when I found out you were being adopted into a wonderful family, in the back of my mind I had always hoped that we would go to a home together. This is a dream come true. Thanks for looking out for me, big guy. You're my hero. See ya soon?! I hope so!!! 5/19 -- Well, Prince used his charm to convince his parents to fill out an adoption application! I guess everyone wants to make sure it's the best home for me so there are some discussions going on. I'll find out on Friday. Whatever happens, thanks for going to bat for me, Prince.
I suppose now is a good time to confess that I'm not a cool cat like Prince. He's dignified and wise. I'm kind of a clumsy guy with big feet and a long body so sometimes I'm not the most graceful cat when I jump or play. But I've got a big heart and I want so desperately to have a family to love. 5/21 -- Late in the afternoon today I found out that YES!! I'm going home and am going to live with Prince and be a part of a real family! I am still in shock that this is happening. I am excited and scared, all at the same time. I hope everyone likes me. I will try to make a good impression. Prince, I'll just do what you do, ok? But you know what's funny. Right after I found out, two different people emailed to say they wanted to adopt me. Can you believe it?! That's almost like what happened to Prince.
I think I'll be going home next week, but I don't know what day yet. I'll keep you posted and tell you as soon as I find out. I'm going to have a family! Somebody loves me!!!! 5/22 -- Today was busy with lots of adopters stopping by. One person commented that I was handsome and asked who I was. Then, I heard the best thing ever. The adoption counselor replied, "That's Grayson. He has been adopted and he'll be going home soon." I've been waiting a long time to hear those words.
BTW, I found out I'll be leaving around the 4th June. I can't wait! 5/25 -- I found out that one of my new friends, Grommet, is about my age and he's real nice and not aggressive. I bet we'll have some fun playing together. Can you tell I'm getting excited to go home?! 5/26 -- We got an email from my new mom!! She said: "Tell Grayson we have Da Bird here, of course - it's a Grommet favorite, and he doesn't mind sharing at all. Tell our boy we can't wait to see him again, and we love him."
Thanks, mom and dad. I love you too!! You guys are the best for rescuing me. See ya soon! 5/27 -- Thought you might like to read our entry in the Most Heartwarming Story contest. Of course, it's about Prince! If we're chosen, the shelter will win $2000. That sure would pay for a lot of cat food. Hey, Prince: my blogger said she stole some of the cute things mom wrote about you, and she hoped that was ok. Mom can take half the credit if we win! 5/30 -- I'm so excited to be going, but I can't forget the kitty friends I'm leaving behind. I have to decide who to hand my blog over to.
Mitzi is already blogging, but she's getting very discouraged. I wish someone could see past how stressed she is and give her a chance. If you look at the video that was taken when she first arrived, she was so sweet and loving. The last year has really broken her spirit. Good luck, Mitzi. I know there is a family out there for you. Everyone is trying to find them.
So, after Mitzi, comes:
1. Kami. She is outgoing and fun and has a wild side sometimes running figure eights through the reception area! She would do well with an active family but no other cats please.
2. Daisy, a sweet and feminine girl who always gets overlooked. Cute, mellow, gentle and loving. She always seems to be overshadowed by a more outgoing cat. I wish someone would spend the time to get to know her better.
3. Monty and Cricket littermates who came to the shelter as kittens with their mom. They will be one year old in July and never had a family. 6/1 -- It's official!! My dad is picking me up on Friday. I can't wait!! [I've got a dad!! Yippeee!!!] 6/2 -- Only two more nights at the shelter. I'll be sleeping at home Friday night. Home: I like the sound of that! Hey, Prince, will you remember me? 6/3 -- Hi Prince! Thanks for your email. I'm glad you remember me! I'm not as worldly as you are, but I'll try not to be nervous. See you tomorrow!! Tell my new brothers and sisters that I'm coming. We can all have dinner together. I don't have anything to pack so I'm ready to go. 6/4 -- It's about 7am now and I'm starting to say my goodbyes. Thanks to my caregivers for not only feeding me and scooping the littertrays, but for really caring about me and trying to cheer me up when I was depressed. Bye to all the cats at the shelter. Good luck to all of you. If Prince and I can make it out of here, so can you!! Mitzi, take care. I hope you can find your perfect home soon.
I'm having a hard time deciding who should take over my blog, so I won't. Kami and Daisy will both start their blogs next weekend, then Monty and Cricket will start a joint blog the weekend after that.
Hey, dad, see you soon!! Mom, set another plate. I'll be home for dinner tonight!
