San Diego takes a bite out of puppy mill outlets

“WA-HOO!”

Monty, a Jack Russell Terrier

Dogs like Monty were seized in a puppy mill raid by 3 agencies, including Roscommon County (MI) Animal Shelter.

That was the enthusiastic reaction of one of our staffers upon reading the news that the San Diego (CA) City Council has voted unanimously to ban the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. The new law should take effect in about 30 days after a second reading by the council, according to the article in dvm360.com. Other places in California have similar bans, but San Diego is the second largest city in the entire nation to do the right thing, Los Angeles being the first.

Petfinder gives another big “Wa-hoo!” for San Diego Councilwoman Lorie Zapf for setting this bill in motion. Her effort is one step forward to stop the inhumane treatment of animals in order to supply pet stores. We hope her example spreads by giant steps across the country.
