I get a lot of comments when I have my dog, Jefferson, out and about with me. He does have very striking features and I, personally, think that he is the most stunning dog ever. I'm not just saying that because he's my best friend either. He really is gorgeous! When we're out and about, people do comment on his appearance. I often hear "that's one good looking dog". I always politely thank them and then they start asking the questions. I am most often asked from where I got him. I've ...
It may seem that my wake up tactics are random and simple each day. I assure you, dear friends, that is not the case. The mental and physical prowess required for wake up strategy is off the charts. Must get a quick nap to recharge. This type of effort takes years to refine. And, while I realize I make it look effortless and haphazard, that is all part of the genius that is the cat wake up strategy. I employed one of my favorite wake up tactics this morning. First, I spent a few ...

For a long time, Madison Wanamaker of Costa Mesa, CA, had wanted to adopt a German Shepherd , but she had no hint of the ramifications of fulfilling her dream. January 2012 was a bad time for Suzanne Nelson of Bellevue, WA. While she was waiting for the results of a biopsy to find out if she had cancer, her beloved 13-year-old Pomeranian , Bear, died with gallbladder disease. She had been browsing on Petfinder for some time and had noticed a cute Pom named Munchkin on the website, but didn’t want to upset Bear with a new dog in the house. Munchkin was right there when Suzanne Nelson needed him most. After Bear’s death, she ...

Valerie Cook isn’t one to let life’s little things hold her back. To her, giving a dog a pill for incontinence once a day was one of those little things. To others, such a responsibility made them pass by a lovable yellow Labrador Retriever named Rose, who was listed on Petfinder by the Humane Society of NE Iowa . The dog was rejected repeatedly and lingered in the shelter without a family of her own. Learn why Petfinder believes all dogs should wear collars and tags . ...

Maddy spent nearly five years in a puppy mill , having litter after litter. During those years, this French bulldog was known as 86, a number tattooed on her ear. Her feet were damaged from standing on wire all her life, and she didn't know how to walk. At last, her little body gave out, and she could have no more puppies. Fortunately, rather than destroying her, the breeder relinquished her to All Rovers Rescue Friends (ARRF), based in Toledo, OH. Maddy enjoys a home and yard after ...

As I write this blog about senior pets who need homes for the holidays, Doodles, a tiny 10-year-old, formerly stray Chihuahua whose life before me remains a dark mystery, snores sweetly on my lap. I recently adopted her from In the Arms of Angels , a Tucson, Ariz., group that received one of the Petfinder Foundation 's photography grants. Doodles is a dutiful model when the Petfinder Foundation needs a photo illustration. (Photo credit: Karen Hollish) The photos of adoptable ...

Thanksgiving is a great time to reflect on the joy that my pets have brought to my life. My family is very grateful to be spending the upcoming holiday with our two dogs, Brewsky and Toby. We rescued them separately, but they instantly became "brothers." My husband and I felt so strongly that our dogs were such an important part of our lives that, when we got married, Brewsky and Toby walked down the aisle as our ring bearers. Our dogs were great ring bearers! We are very thankful ...

OK, today, we're going to let my inner dork out and admit that I really enjoyed the Harry Potter books and movies and was even looking up Harry Potter on Pinterest the other day. Don't judge, we all have our little secrets. Anyway, while I was looking up Harry Potter on Pinterest, I came across a photo that I feel pertains to dogs and how we should view dog breeds. The photo points out that not all Hufflepuffs are weak (referring to Cederick Diggory), not all Ravenclaws are stuck up ( ...

5 Life Lessons Grumpy Cat Taught Me by Layla Morgan Wilde 1) Wishes can come true We all have dreams and goals but real wisdom is knowing when to push and when to go with the flow. When unfortunate timing crushed my chances of a scheduled one-on-one interview with Grumpy Cat before the recent Friskies Awards, I channeled my inner Grumpy Cat and asked: What would Grumpy Cat do? Sure, she might appear miffed or frownie-faced but she wouldn't pull a hissy fit or feel sorry for herself. ...
