Mastitis in Dogs

Symptoms of Mastitis in Dogs

If your dog has just given birth to a litter, it's natural to focus on the new pups. However, it's just as important that you monitor the mother, too. You should take her temperature daily for the first two weeks following delivery. If her temperature goes over 103.5 degrees Fahrenheit (39.7 degrees Celsius), take her to the veterinarian.

Other things you should keep an eye out for include:

  • Mammary glands that are painful, warm, firm, swollen or releasing a puslike fluid
  • The mother avoids nursing her pups
  • Pups that seem hungry or underfed
  • Abnormal tiredness (lethargy) in the mother
  • Loss of appetite in the mother
