What Dogs Are Prone to Incontinence?
Like us, dogs tend to have less bladder control as they age. Older female dogs, in particular, are more prone to incontinence -- especially if they have been spayed. In spayed females, incontinence may start showing up in middle age.
Incontinence is more likely to affect dogs experiencing physical ailments or injuries such as:
- Urinary stones and infections
- Weakened bladder sphincter
- Prostate disease and disorders
- Hormone imbalance
- Congenital anatomic disorders
- Injury of the spine or intervertebral disc
- Illnesses, such as diabetes, that cause excessive water consumption
- Medication side effects
Some breeds -- such as Cocker Spaniels, Doberman Pinschers and Old English Sheepdogs -- may be at a slightly higher risk for incontinence.
