Just like humans, dogs can get eye infections. Symptoms include a thick green or yellow discharge around your dog's eye. The discharge can be made up of mucus or pus that crusts over the eyelids. Other signs of infection are redness, tenderness, tearing, squinting and light sensitivity.
When your dog has an eye infection, he may also exhibit certain behavioral changes, including a lack of interest in food, crying or whining. He may also paw at his eyes.
A dog can catch a contagious eye infection from another dog, or develop an infection after getting bacteria-harboring particles in his eye.
Breeds Prone to Eye Infections
Although a dog of any breed can get an eye infection, short-nosed breeds, including the Maltese, Pekingese, Pug and Shih Tzu, are especially prone to them because hair around the folds of skin near their eyes can act as an irritant. Cocker Spaniels and Poodles are also prone to blocked tear ducts.
