Yeast Infection in a Dog's Ears

Dogs at Risk for Yeast Infections in Ears

Yeast might be common in all dogs, but when it comes to ear infections, certain breeds are at higher risk.

Infection is more likely in breeds with long, pendulous ears -- such as Basset Hounds, Cocker Spaniels and English Setters -- because their ears are more likely to trap in moisture.

Because of the role moisture plays in yeast growth, dogs in warm, high-humidity climates may also be at a slightly higher risk of infection.

Other at-risk dogs include those with weakened immune systems, allergies, hormonal imbalances, high levels of earwax or who are taking medications such as glucocorticoids (prednisone) or antibiotics.
