Note from Our Founder

Dear Friends,

An article in Guideposts magazine about the birth of Petfinder deluged me with praise for what I did in conceiving the Web site. But, in truth, Petfinder's impact on animal welfare comes down to you. It's what you did when you adopted. It's what you do when you tell a neighbor or friend not to buy a pet but to adopt instead. You can help even more by sponsoring a pet yet to be adopted. You are the key to ending the euthanasia of adoptable pets. Thank you so much.

As Ever,
Betsy Saul

Happy Tail:
Signing On for Lola

From Perry M.,
Murfreesboro, TN:

Lola had been adopted before when she was only eight weeks old. But her previous family could not figure out why she wouldn't come to them when she called and had a difficult time training her. It was soon found out that Lola was deaf, and she was returned to the rescue. Lola was now eight months old…and that's where we came in. Lola was perfect for us because our family knows sign language. Read the full story.

Adopted from Bully Bliss Pit Bull Rescue, Hopkinsville, KY.

DEAF AWARENESS WEEK
September 21 – 28 is Deaf Awareness Week, and we want to increase the awareness of deaf pets. With a little extra work, you can form an amazing bond with a deaf animal, like Frost, featured here.
Frost

DID YOU KNOW?
Many deaf dogs are white. Pigment cells "that color the fur and skin in non-white dogs convert sound waves into electrical impulses that nerves then carry to the brain. When the ear lacks pigment cells, the nerve endings atrophy and die. As a result, sound waves entering the ear go no farther, and the dog cannot hear."

HERE'S WHAT YOU SAID
Veterinary expenses for pets are escalating and with our new, affordable PetFirst safety net for newly adopted pets (see below), we wanted to know if pet insurance ever saved the day for you. Here are two people who said it made a difference.

Marlene A. wrote: "I could not financially live without it. Both my dogs had ruptured cruciate ligaments in their hind legs. The surgery was very costly. After paying the $50 deductible, I received 90% of fair and reasonable as reimbursement…You never know when something catastrophic is going to occur. In the end the policy pays for itself."

Kathy N. wrote that pet insurance was the best advice she got as a new pet parent. When a neighbor's dog attacked Kathy's dog, Shorty, she rushed him to the emergency vet and had X-rays but nothing was found. "It wasn't until the next day that I saw the puncture wound. Off to our vet, where Shorty needed to have the wound cleaned, two staples and a course of antibiotics…I, too, am recovering. It was a comfort to have the reimbursement from the pet insurance."

Thanks for your responses.

TELL US
We all love our pets, but sometimes they can be little rascals until given the proper training. Do you have a success story about working through behavior challenges? If so, tell us.

DEAF-INITELY ADOPTABLE
Deaf animals make great companions. They bark, meow, cuddle, play and enjoy life like their hearing counterparts. See how to train a deaf dog and consider adopting one of these hearing impaired pets.
