Note from Our Founder

Dear Friends,

Angels walk among us. You won't have any doubt when you read Opie's story. First, a good Samaritan rescued him on a cold January night, then Debby at Short N Sweet Dog Rescue nursed him to health, and finally Lori adopted him, a dog that wouldn't win any beauty contests. They all saw beyond that to his beautiful soul. Another angel is Betty, who adopted a blind Dachshund, Phoebe. We honor everyone who adopts a homeless pet, but special thanks to those of you who open your hearts to "less-adoptable" ones.

Take Care,
Betsy Saul

Happy Tail:
Close Call

From Mindy S.,
Indianapolis, IN

Layla came to the shelter as an owner surrender. She had clearly been abused and was not much but skin and bones. Layla was lucky enough to come across a nice foster mom and was painstakingly nursed back to health...A few months after I took Layla home, her foster mom told me that Layla was almost euthanized before she found a foster home. I couldn't help but let the tears fall to know that someone almost killed my dog just because she was a "Pit Bull." Read the full story.

Adopted from Anderson Animal Care and Control, Anderson, IN.

A "SPECIAL" DAY
Big black dogs. FIV+ cats. Senior pets. Special needs pets. Many factors can make a pet seem "less adoptable." To promote these animals, Petfinder has designated August 12 as "Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day."

DID YOU KNOW?
Over 14,000 Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers are listed on Petfinder.com. Read more about these dogs.
HERE'S WHAT YOU SAID
In June we asked what you would say to encourage adopters to consider adding a senior pet to their families. These responses pretty much sum it up:
Margaret: I volunteer at a shelter. I see the puppies go (and sometimes come back as older guys when the cuteness wears off), but I tell everyone who asks that I would take an older pup over a youngster any day. Their love and faithfulness are treasures that cannot be replaced.
Yvette: A senior has lived though it all, as they say, "Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt." They are unflappable...(usually) housebroken, without the chewing stages those rascally puppies often go though. They are patient and kind and, above all, full of love and grateful for the day they came into your life. They have that sense of being rescued that they will never forget.
Kate: I can't say enough good about the warmth and love that you get from a senior pet...they are just so glad to find a forever home that they know is theirs they just pour it out.
Thanks so much for responding to our question.

FOUNDATION NEWS

HIDE, PERCH & GO
The Petfinder.com Foundation's Hide, Perch & Go program is ongoing and provides cleverly designed boxes that can be assigned to cats and serve as their hiding places, beds or perches. While the cat's cage is being cleaned, shelter staff can transform the box into a portable carrier. It can also go with him or her to a new home. You can donate to the Hide, Perch & Go program through GreaterGood.org. One hundred percent of your gift goes to the program.

The Petfinder.com Foundation is a public charity created to assist Petfinder shelters and rescue groups through problem solving, fundraising, and relief in times of stress or disaster. Petfinder provides a searchable database of animals that need homes from over 12,500 animal shelters and adoption agencies across the USA, Canada and Mexico, free ads for lost, found, adoptable and wanted pets, pet-related message boards, a library of pet information, and pet-related content for kids. Since its inception, Petfinder has helped find homes for more than 12 million pets.
