Dear Friends,

Race to the Right House! That's the theme of the marketing campaign that won Michigan Humane Society a $20,000 prize in the 2008 Maddie's Fund Marketing Competition for Petfinder.com members. The MHS program coincided with the U.S. Presidential campaign. Animal Friends, Pittsburgh, won a similar prize for its Red Collar Society (akin to those ladies in red hats and purple). Wow! What clever programs our members came up with. Bravo to Maddie's Fund for rewarding innovative marketing programs with $100,000 in prizes (for the second year in a row) to 123 Petfinder members. They inspire us!

Happy Tail:
A Piggy Tale

I believe that sometimes we don't choose our pets but rather they choose us. Ms. Piggy chose our family, and I couldn't be happier. It all started when a friend of mine told me she wanted to adopt a guinea pig from a rescue or shelter. I went to Petfinder intending to help my friend search for her new guinea pig. I did not plan to add a guinea pig to our home. Little did I know what would happen next. First I was very surprised to see how many guinea pigs were out there in shelters or rescues looking for homes. Read the full story.

HERE'S WHAT YOU SAID
Last month we asked how you cut back on pet expenses without skimping on your pets' needs. Most of you said you haven't and won't cut back on your pet expenses. Instead you eat out less, go to fewer movies, visit the library rather than the bookstore, and find other ways to scale down. Some of you have started making your own pet treats.

Here's a unique tip from Kelli Rau:

"We have set up a savings account just for our dog so we always know we have something set aside for him in case of an emergency."

HIDE, PERCH & GO
Over 80,000 Hide, Perch & Go boxes have been distributed as part of a Petfinder.com Foundation pilot program to reduce stress in shelter cats. The cleverly designed box can be assigned to a particular cat and serve as his hiding place, a bed or a perch. When the cat's cage is being cleaned, shelter staff can transform the box into a portable carrier. It can also go with him or her to a new home.

The foundation partnered with PETCO Foundation and The Animal Rescue Site to initiate the HP&G program.

The Petfinder.com Foundation is a public charity created to assist Petfinder shelters and rescue groups through problem solving, fundraising, and relief in times of stress or disaster. Petfinder provides a searchable database of animals that need homes from over 11,500 animal shelters and adoption agencies across the USA, Canada and Mexico, free ads for lost, found, adoptable and wanted pets, pet-related message boards, a library of pet information, and pet-related content for kids. Since its inception, Petfinder has helped find homes for more than 12 million pets.
