Note from Our Founder

Dear Friends,

Your pet is never too old to learn--and neither are you. Find out what to look for in a good trainer and read our top 10 training tips. Cats and kittens can benefit from training, too, and some of our Petfinder members, like San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, offer kitty classes. Do you already have a great trainer? Make sure they're listed in our local services directory and then add your rating. Finally, read Teddy's happy "tail" (opposite) to see what a difference training can make in one small pet's life.

Happy Tail:
Training Teddy

From Mindy N., St. Louis, MO:

Teddy was part of a litter of white pups, and nobody wanted the little black dog. I saw him on Petfinder and immediately knew he was the one for me. Poor Teddy had no social skills and was afraid of everything. He had no idea how to walk on a leash or be comfortable with humans. But three weeks of individualized training turned him around. Now he loves to play with other dogs and be outside. Going for rides in the car is a favorite activity...continued

Teddy was adopted from Pet Rescue Service/Pet Search St. Louis.

TELL US
Leslie May of Indianapolis adopted Ben after seeing him on Petfinder. She re-named him Johann after the composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. Her other pets are named after composers, too.

Tell us what famous person inspired your pet's name and why. We'll report on your responses in October.

HERE'S WHAT YOU SAID
Your answers to last month's question showed that our pets really do miss us when we go back to school (and we miss them). Some of you wondered how others cope. Here's a response from Karen Katanick, a teacher:

To help my pets cope with my school schedule, I keep our morning routine as consistent as possible. We get up, have a run in the backyard, come into the house for a treat, I have coffee and Otis sits on my lap, while Bessie sits along side of us. We listen to the same morning news broadcast…I always leave the television on so the sound is there to help comfort them. When I get home in the afternoon/evening, I play with them before I do anything else, and often, we go for a walk around the block…To help minimize my separation anxiety, I talk about them and all of their cute and wonderful antics. I also keep lots of pictures on my desk and in my classroom.

HELP SUNCHIPS RE-GREEN GREENSBURG In May 2007, a deadly tornado struck the town of Greensburg, Kansas. Ninety-five percent of Greensburg's trees were destroyed. SunChips® has made a significant donation to replace Greensburg's trees but needs your help to complete the job. TRAINING TIPS
Sit and Down are generally taught as two separate commands, so don't confuse your pooch by ordering him to sit down.

If you want your dog to come when you call his or her name, always associate the name with pleasant things like positive attention or food. Use only single words without the dog's name for reprimands, for example, Stop!
