Note from Our Founder

Dear Friends,

Our dog Jim loves his beds. On his first visit to PETCO, he did a double take when he saw the wondrous aisle of beds. He would have been happy to give each a test rest. Jim has beds in every room — and he's an equal opportunity napper. But twice a day, we dump him out of bed to go for a walk — about three miles. Exercise is beneficial to him and us, and I would encourage you to hit the trail with your dog and actively play with your other pets. Rest and exercise are good for what ails you.

Jim Be Healthy,
Betsy Saul

Happy Tail:
No Trouble at All

Submitted by Jen VanderSande of Plymouth, Wisconsin:

Poor Trouble was abandoned at a truck stop and brought to the humane society where he had troubles, so he went into foster care. We were browsing through Petfinder, and his picture caught our eye. Our son is handicapped, and Trouble has been a wonderful puppy for him. Trouble realizes that Trenton cannot play with him, so he brings all his toys and lays them on Trenton. He is just the best dog ever. I can't image why someone left him. Without Petfinder, we would not have found him, since the humane society is two-and-a-half hours away from our house.

Trouble was adopted from Rock County Humane Society in Janesville, Wisconsin.

May Happy Tail Trouble

TELL US
Where does your pet sleep? Does he warm your head like a Russian hat? Or does he snooze in a crate or bed of his own? Let us know and we'll share some of your answers in June. (Please include what kind of pet you're writing about: dog, cat, etc.)

COMING SOON
Kick off the celebration of June as Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month early! Over 126,000 cats on Petfinder are waiting for homes. Big or small, shorthair or longhair, young or mature, any of them would love to curl up in your lap. Open your heart to a kitty (or kitties!) in need.

Economy
HERE'S WHAT YOU SAID
In April we asked how the economy was affecting you and your pets. About 200 people replied to this unscientific survey. Not everyone answered every question. While about 65% of the respondents said they were cutting back on their own expenses, mostly on entertainment, 73% said they would not change the food they were feeding their pets, even if it was expensive. Ali Wilkinson was one of these. "Their care and needs will not be affected by the economy – that's why I work two jobs," she said.

Plenty of others, however, wrote that they had no choice but to cut back: they were shopping for bargains, clipping coupons and switching to store brands, doing their own grooming and buying fewer extras, like treats and toys.

Thanks so much for responding.

Your Donations Go to Work!

Petfinder.com Foundation disaster grants recently went to Midwest Friends of Animals and Horse-Angels Horse Rescue, both in Indiana, to help with earthquake damage to their facilities. A third grant went to Etosha Rescue & Adoption Center in Sequin, Texas, after windstorms damaged five outdoor dog kennel canopies at the facility. Nineteen Petfinder member organizations received disaster preparedness grants totaling $50,000, providing support so the recipients can be more prepared in the event of a disaster.
