Dear Friends,
Thanks to all of you who stepped up to help during the California wildfires. Over 350 people offered to foster pets, and donations poured into our Disaster Fund to help stricken pet adoption groups. We're always proud of the way you respond during emergencies, but my thanks also go to all animal lovers. Whether your part is helping neighborhood strays, telling friends to adopt or providing a helping hand to another pet owner in trouble, you're supporting us in our mission to end the euthanasia of adoptable pets.

Happy Tail: Golden Years

From Alison Jones, Marshfield, Mass.:

Simba was listed on Petfinder as a special needs cat, and because he was 12 years old, few people were interested in him. I emailed back and forth with NOAH about what his issues were and decided to adopt him. What a blessing! He is the most calm, intelligent, playful cat I have ever had. His health issues have completely disappeared, and other than his missing all but three teeth, you would never guess his age. He is a love: he loves to purr, loves to be brushed, sits right next to me no matter where I am and follows me from room to room. I don't know the circumstances of his being surrendered, but I am thankful that he found me.

Simba was adopted from Nemasket Orphaned Animal Haven, Inc. (NOAH) in Raynham, Mass.

HERE'S WHAT YOU SAID! TRAINING TIPS
Last month we asked you to share your favorite training tips.
Here are our favorites:

Old or young, pets can learn new tricks. Dancing, fetching and singing were the most common tricks you reported in response to our question last month. Here are some others:
  • Boots, a cat, responds to “lie down” and "roll over.”
  • Luna, another feline, does a one-pawed mid-air catch of things thrown to her.
  • Sparky, a Chinese Crested Dog, licks his lips when he hears “prime rib.”
  • Trixie, a Swiss Mountain Dog, lifts her paws when you say, “Reach for the sky,” then falls down and plays dead when you point your index finger and say, “Bang!”
  • Sage, a Shih Tzu, raises her paw when you ask, “Who wants a treat?”
  • Rosie and Daisy, two Papillons, are trained to lie down side-by-side under a little blanket. At the words, "Good Morning," they pop up for their treats.

TELL US: HOW DO YOU AND YOUR PET CELEBRATE?
How do you make the holidays special for your pet? Let us hear from you, and we’ll share some of your responses next month.

PLEASE PASS THE THANKS
When you're giving thanks, remember those who care for homeless pets: the animal control officer who spends the holiday rescuing a stray, the volunteers who feed feral cats on cold mornings, those who spend weekends at PETCO, hosting adoption events, and many many more. Send a thank-you to an adoption group near you.

Petfinder Mug
Our handy 11-oz mug will help you kick-start your busy day. Each purchase helps homeless pets. Available as a two-mug set for $14.95 or a four-mug set for $24.95.
