Letter from the President
  June 2006

Hello and happy June Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month!

I’m in the midst of my annual pre-summer try-to-fit-into-my-summer-clothes crunch and find myself day-dreaming of my favorite treats when I’m supposed to be focusing on veggies. So, is it any wonder that I discovered, amongst the amazingly beautiful cats on Petfinder.com, 210 Oreos, 137 Cookies, 57 Skittles, 12 Twinkies, and five charming kitties named Frito? There is one handsome boy in L.A. named Dorito.

As an animal lover, I invite you to celebrate this important month with me. In the U.S., the animal welfare issues concerning cats are lagging behind those concerning dogs, even though there are more cats in homes than dogs (90.5 million compared to 74 million). Here are some things you can do to help:

  • Adopt one of the 81,733 cats posted on Petfinder.com
  • Interest one of your dieting friends in one of our non-fattening, healthy Oreos or Fritos, or even an Irwin or Fluffy! Pets will help keep them healthy, emotionally and physically.
  • Spread the word about Trap-Neuter-Return so that we stem the tide of cats into shelters by addressing the 10 million feral cats living amongst us.
  • Offer to bring your local shelter some cat toys, beds, and even your ragged towels (you deserve a new set) to make their resident kitties a bit more comfortable

Have a great June and, go ahead, give in to a Cookie.

Happy Tail: From Homeless to Goddess

happy tail picture“The next day the adopter brought her back …The feline’s future looked bleak.”

The Oriental shorthair’s owners dropped her off at Wasatch Humane in Bountiful, Utah, saying they were moving and couldn’t take her.

Perhaps it was true, but the cat’s condition suggested something darker. The way she flinched and lashed out when people tried to pet her made shelter staff members believe she had been abused. An untreated respiratory illness plagued her, and she was skinny and bedraggled.

The shelter staff nursed her back to health, and eventually she was adopted. The next day the adopter brought her back with the complaint that the cat had bitten her. The feline’s future looked bleak.

For nine months, she lived at the shelter, until one day Kate Hardy of Park City, Utah, read her story on Petfinder.com. Her heart went out to the cat.

Kate adopted her and named her Isis (after the Egyptian mother/queen goddess). Today, Isis’ scars have faded, and “she is the most loving, affectionate cat I’ve ever seen — even to strangers who come over,” Kate says. “You never know what can happen!”

Love Your Cat?
Thank a Rat!

Ever wonder why Fluffy left the wild for catnip toys and scratching posts?

You’ve got rats and mice to thank. If it weren’t for their coming to see all of ancient Egyptian civilization as one big picnic (note to self: not a good idea to store all your food in baskets), Fluffy would still be ferocious.

Fortunately, around 3500 B.C., wild cats discovered that these cities were a place to feast, and Egyptians used treats to coax them into their homes. In fact, Egyptians came to revere cats so much that killing one was punishable by death!

Traders took domesticated cats from Egypt to Asia and Europe, and from there they made their way to the Americas. Today, domestic cats make beloved pets on every continent except Antarctica!
