“He loved being free to roll in the clean grass at will.”
Geezer spent his first years in a Missouri puppy mill, and when he became too sick to be of any use to the owners, they hauled him to the dog auction.
By some quirk of fate, “he was misplaced for three days, scavenging for food on his own,” says Martha Crowdes from Homewoods Rescue for the Wayward Hound in Bivalve, Md. She and Lisa Winters had come to Missouri to rescue dogs, and when she saw Geezer, she knew he had to be one of them.
He was in sorry shape. His ears were infected, he had worms and mange, and a big chunk was missing from one of his ears. Conjunctivitis blurred his vision, and his nails curled into the pads of his feet.
Puppy mill dogs like Geezer spend their lives in tiny wire cages, so when Martha got him to her farm for rehabilitation, it was a special joy for her to see his reaction to his new freedom. “For months, as I put him back together, he just shadowed me around the farm,” Martha says. “He had a pile of hay in the barn and came and went as he pleased. He loved being free to roll in the clean grass at will.”
Eventually Martha posted his photo and story on Petfinder.com. When Alberta Tiscione of Hamilton, N.J., saw him, her heart melted. “I emailed my application and was approved to adopt him,” she says. “He has now put on weight and has a little jump in his step. He’s such a joy.”
Geezer is not a puppy, but thanks to Homewoods Rescue and Alberta Tiscione, he’s not over the hill yet.
