Happy Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month!
My family has always included somewhat naughty pooches with high prey drives, so my opportunity to have somebunny love me hasn’t yet come. However, I’m really intrigued by rabbits – partly because I’ve noticed that the rabbit rescue people I happen to know are really brainy types. At Petfinder, we joke that maybe rabbits are the Ginkgo biloba of the pet world. Even if there is no real causative relationship between rescuing rabbits and intelligence, we all agree that it's smart to help spread the word that way too many Easter Bunnies end up in shelters waiting for their fur-ever homes.
Incidentally, we have a new long-eared (honorary rabbit?) family member this week. Her name is Shirley, and she is a 12-year-old goat who is as pretty and sweet as they come. Her under bite, her sparkly eyes, and her wisdom (I bet she likes rabbits) have won us over. Because she was originally rescued by a dog trainer, Shirley is clicker-trained and she even gives “paw!” I hope she’s happy here, where she will have other goats to play with and maybe, someday, a rescued rabbit.
Thank you again for all of your continuing support and help in our mission:

P.S. If rabbit rescue people are all brainy, do I dare wonder what characteristics goat rescue people share? |

“It’s hard to find homes for rabbits who are white or mostly white, over five pounds and shy.”
Nearly four years in foster care! It didn’t look as if Hansel and Gretel would ever find a permanent home. They had been in foster care since the day they were saved from euthanasia when they were six months old. In all that time, there had only been five inquiries, and none of them had gone to the next step: adoption. “
It’s hard to find homes for rabbits who are white or mostly white, over five pounds and shy,” says Angela Carrigan of Rabbit and Pocket Pet Adoptions, Reseda, Calif. “Add to that the fact that they were four-and-a-half-years old, and it pretty much nixed their chances.”
Then just short of the pair’s four-year bunniversary, Gerald and Donna from Huntington Beach, Calif., saw them on Petfinder.com and adopted them. The couple has two other pairs of bunnies, with one in each pair missing an eye.
“It takes very special people to look beyond color, size and personality,” Angela says. “Gerald and Donna are those special people.”
We love to hear about heartwarming pet adoptions. Send us your story. Each month we’ll choose one lucky family to receive a six-month supply of FRONTLINE ® Plus or FRONTLINE Top Spot ® from our sponsor, Merial!
