October 2005
Dear Friends,

At Petfinder.com, we’re humbled by our staff, our shelter-friends, and our volunteers and how they’ve dedicated the last few months to helping pets and pet owners left hurt and homeless by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Good things come from bad and I’m incredibly proud of the collaborative Animal Emergency Response Network, powered by Maddie’s Fund and Petfinder.com. HSUS, ASPCA, AHA, Best Friends, UAN and member shelters worked together to save Katrina pets through this landmark effort of cooperation. It is the universal database for pets in disasters. In addition to reuniting THOUSANDS of pets with owners, this collaborative effort gave people that wanted to help a single, effective call to action resulting in increased donations and traffic to all of the national rescue organizations. Based on our early analysis, we know that you and our six million visitors last month played a huge role in the unprecedented giving. So from all of the national organizations, THANK YOU!

Want to help a Katrina pet? Consider this: Katrina caused over 5% more pets to need temporary sheltering this fall over the normal homeless pet population. Communities across the country took them in and now you can help make space for them by adopting a homeless pet from your local shelter today.

Can’t adopt but want to help? Consider donating to your local animal welfare group. After millions of dollars were raised to help Katrina pets, local placement groups reported that their own donations plummeted. This combined with their own efforts to help Katrina pets are making fall donations more vital than ever.

Until next month --

HAPPY TAIL: Lucky Dog Reunited with Family after Katrina

Keith (left) reunites Benji with his family.
“He stayed with us the whole day, walking over what was left of houses and rooftops.”

The Benji-look-alike was glad to see someone. He had been waiting ever since his family disappeared in the confusion after Hurricane Katrina. The dog followed Keith Musgrove and other firefighters from Hoover, AL, as they searched an area of Waveland, MS, reduced to rubble.

“He stayed with us the whole day,” Keith said, “walking over what was left of houses and rooftops. When we quit for the night, he followed us back to our camp.” They named him Lucky.

When Keith returned to Alabama, he took the pooch with him and posted his description on Petfinder.com’s disaster database, never really believing that he would find the owner. He received 15 or 20 emails, but only Lee Ann Fial could verify the match by telling Keith the dog was wearing a rainbow-colored collar.

Keith and two other firefighters delivered Lucky, whose real name was Benji, to the Fials in their temporary residence in West Point, MS.

No Tricks, No Treats

Halloween can be frighteningly fun for kids and adults alike, and many pets are more than happy to put their best paw forward for the festivities. But for others, Halloween can be truly terrifying. Pets may be frightened by people in masks and costumes and parades of strangers coming to the door or coming over for parties. If your pet is timid or easily stressed, keep her in a safe, quiet place for the night. And remember, chocolate and candy can make your pet deathly ill. Be sure to keep sweets well out of reach. The best treat you can give your pet for Halloween is heaps of love.
