Late Summer 2005
Dear Petfinder.com Friends and Supporters,

I’ve been itching to tell you about Sophie, my little cattle dog mix. She likes to express her love by leaning on me and stretching. I call this a "hug.” Unfortunately at this time of the year, our woods are loaded with poison ivy, and as she races here and there, she tramples all the plants I manage to avoid. She celebrates our walk by giving me exuberant hugs and this is why I’ve spent the summer scratching.

Last night as I was dabbing calamine lotion on my legs, I reflected on Sophie’s training. I told her that Little Morgan, who won the 2005 ESPN Great Outdoor Games, probably doesn’t spread poison ivy to his owner and trainer, Mike Jackson. I want to thank Frontline who donated $10,000 in Little Morgan and Mike’s names to the Petfinder.com Foundation to help homeless pets (see the sidebar).

Also this summer yogurt was added to Purina One. This has made my little harbinger of poison ivy very happy. When we first adopted Sophie, she would eat her food and it would come right back up. I got in the habit of giving her a dollop of yogurt in the morning. It helped and she loved it. So I’m really excited to see it in the ingredient list. You can read more about their ingredients below.

One last bit of news: In September, we'll be launching a new and improved look for Petfinder.com and a new search that is even speedier than the one we have now.

I have never looked so forward to autumn as I do this year. My poison ivy will be gone, and with new features, exciting new initiatives and healthier pets, we will save even more lives.

TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL ADOPTABLE PETS
HAVE A CHANCE FOR A HOME

Remember, we always welcome your comments, questions and suggestions, and thank you again for your support for homeless pets.

Until next month --

HAPPY TAIL: HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN

"Their eyes watched approaching cars, wondering, perhaps, if the next one would carry their owners, coming back to retrieve them.”

Cars and semis whizzed by, frightening Sam, whose owner had dumped him along with his two sisters in the median of a busy Interstate highway. The sun beat down on the puppies, and they began to pant. Their eyes watched approaching cars, wondering, perhaps, if the next one would carry their owners, coming back to retrieve them.

Their owners, of course, didn’t return. Yakima Valley Pet Rescue eventually picked them up. After a good meal and time to recover from the heat, the puppies transformed into frisky little furballs.

Sara O’Brien and Chris Hess live more than two hours away in Seattle, but one look at Sam’s photo on Petfinder.com was enough to convince the pair that Sam was the dog for them.

“Sam is short and stout,” Sara says, “but he definitely has a big heart to share. He has become a much loved soul in our household.”

Keeping it Real
Do you know what you’re feeding your pet?

Unless you live on a diet of xanthan gum and yellow dye #3, you know how important real foods are in your diet – whole grains, dairy products, veggies. But when was the last time you took a close look at what you’re feeding your pet?

Warren Eckstein, an internationally known animal expert and spokesperson for Purina ONE®, suggests you take a look. “It’s important for pet owners to know what they are feeding their pets by reading the package labels and selecting products that contain real ingredients,” he explains.

For example, did you know that the oatmeal in Purina ONE dog and cat food promotes digestibility in pets? Or that the salmon provides essential amino acids and omega fatty acids for strong muscles and bones, a shiny coat and a healthy immune system?

And now, Purina ONE is adding an all-new healthy (and real) ingredient to its full line of dog and cat food formulas – yogurt! Just as for humans, yogurt can play an important role in promoting healthy digestion, providing high-quality protein and supporting total body health.

To learn more about reading pet food labels and the benefits of real ingredients, check out the ingredient tool on www.PurinaONE.com. And remember, a healthy pet is a happy pet.

Donates $10,000 to the Petfinder.com Foundation
at the 2005 ESPN
Great Outdoor Games

What do you get when you combine FRONTLINE, the number one veterinarian-recommended flea and tick control product, with the 2005 ESPN Great Outdoor Games?

A winning combination.

When FRONTLINE decided to sponsor the 2005 Great Outdoor Games, Petfinder knew it was a perfect match. Both have a shared love of dogs and a strong commitment to delivering a winning performance every time.

At the very heart of the four-day competition was Team FRONTLINE, 14 champion dogs and their handlers, who proved to be a “howling” success.

The sponsorship also offered FRONTLINE the perfect opportunity to promote pet health, which includes keeping pets flea- and tick- free all year long. Pet owners were invited to stop by the FRONTLINE Locker Room for pet advice, flea- and tick-check demonstrations and the chance to vote for the FRONTLINE Fan Favorite.

The winning dog, Little Morgan, received a lifetime supply of FRONTLINE Plus, and a $10,000 donation to the Petfinder.com Foundation was made by FRONTLINE in the winners’ names (Little Morgan and owner, Mike Jackson).

Thanks FRONTLINE -- you are definitely a winner in our book!
