Dear Petfinder.com Friends and Supporters,

It’s officially summer this month! After a very cool NJ winter and spring I couldn’t be happier. This is a great time for pets and their people to enjoy the great outdoors. However, with summer fun comes summer perils like dehydration, fleas and ticks, and burned paw pads from hot pavement. Take stock before summer officially hits and get extra water bowls, sturdy leashes, Frontline your pet, and make sure her ID tags are up to date.

Did you know June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month? Cats are social creatures and if you have ever considered getting a second cat, this is the month to do it! Shelters fill up with cats in the summer, and there are over 93,000 on Petfinder.com waiting to meet you!

Once again, thanks for spreading the word about Petfinder.com and our mission:

TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL ADOPTABLE PETS
HAVE A CHANCE FOR A HOME

Remember, we always welcome your comments, questions and suggestions, and thank you again for your support for homeless pets.

Until next month --

HAPPY TAIL: STATE OF THE HEART

The tortoise-shell kitten was lying in a heap behind a tavern in Highland, Illinois. Her long hair was wet, and she was mal-nourished. One leg was injured, and a wound festered on her tail.

A police officer found her and called Highland Animal Shelter, which took her in. The staff named her Nebraska for the street on which she was found. It was too late to save the kitten’s tail, and it had to be amputated. She went into a foster home and the shelter staff posted her story and photo on Petfinder.com.

Meanwhile Debbie Boone of Cedar Lake, Indiana, was searching on Petfinder.com for a kitten to adopt to relieve her sadness over the death of her cat, Salem. Nebraska’s story touched Boone’s heart, and she called the shelter to ask about the little feline.

“I was a little dismayed to find that this shelter was in Highland, Illinois, and not in nearby Highland, Indiana,” she says. “But after hearing this kitten’s story, I knew that we were meant to adopt her.”

She and her husband, Kevin, traveled 4-1/2 hours one-way to pick up Nebbe (as they now call her). “At first she was very timid,” Boone says, “but now at five months, she stands proud and wags her little “deer” tail. She has learned to come when I whistle for her and can retrieve a play mouse. Her newest trick is to jump to my shoulder when I tap my chest. We just love her and are very happy to have found her on Petfinder.com—no matter how far we had to travel.”

Adoption in June: It’s the Cat’s Meow!
June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month, and if you love cats the way we love cats, consider celebrating the occasion with the ASPCA and Petfinder.com in any of these ways:

  • First (of course) if you’ve thought of adopting a cat, now is the time! There are currently more than 93,000 adoptable cats on Petfinder.com, each in need of a loving home. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to score the perfect feline find here.
  • Second, if you can't adopt, consider contacting your local shelter or placement group about volunteering. Many of these organizations need helpers to pet, play with and/or groom cats waiting for adoption (and the enrichment improves their chances for it!).
  • Last but not least, help us spread the word about cat adoption in June. We’ve posted the truth about 9 Feline Myths and also 9 Ways to Welcome Home Your New Cat by Jacque Schultz, CPDT, at Petfinder.com. Take a minute to read these two short pieces then share the info with friends who may want to adopt a cat this month!

SUMMER SAFETY

June 21
First Day of Summer
For us it means picnics, pools and action movies about aliens! But remember that animals need special attention in the hot summer months. Always carry water for your pet if you jet around town. When going for walks, remember that your dog doesn’t have comfy sneakers like you -- sidewalks and asphalt can be scorching. And of course, never leave an animal in a closed-up car.

July 4
Independence Day
Scared by loud noises and fireworks, the 4th of July sends many animals scrambling, jumping fences and chewing through leashes to end up (if lucky) at shelters across the country. Keep your pet safe and secure this 4th of July:

1. Keep pets inside in a comfortable, place away from windows and doors.

2. Mask the sounds of fireworks and gunshots with music or TV.

3. For very skittish pets, talk to your vet about the pros and cons of a sedative to keep your pet calm.
