Most of us think of May and instantly think “Mother’s Day!” I know I do, and it’s so inspiring to think that Petfinder.com has helped find “moms” and “dads” for more than 6,000,000 pets. May is a great month to recognize an outstanding pet mom you know, thanking her for providing a great home to her pet and being a model for future pet parents! And as always, I want to extend my thanks to you for spreading the word about Petfinder.com and helping to support our mission:

The cries of the elderly Chihuahua, weak and frightened, could hardly be heard. She’d been thrown like so much trash in a garbage can in the Bronx. Emalinda Narvaez of Earth Angels was walking her dogs and heard the cries. She pulled the dog out of the bin. The poor little thing had a huge tumor on her stomach and another in her lower jaw. A veterinarian operated on her and said it would be a miracle if she survived.
But the tenacious little dog pulled through. Earth Angels posted her story and photo on Petfinder.com where 71-year-old Arlene Lavoie of Manchester, Conn., saw her. “My heart was touched by her story,” she said, and she was just what Arlene was looking for: an older dog. “I did not want to adopt a puppy because I didn’t want to leave the dog behind in case something happened to me.” She named the dog Miracle.
Arlene says Miracle is a joy, and it seems as if she has been part of the family forever. The family includes another rescued Chihuahua named Rowdy, who is 13. “Rowdy was abused, and it took me quite a while to restore his trust in humans,” Arlene says. “He is fine now, and the two dogs get along great.”
Stories like this restore our trust in humans, too. |

Few people realize what a valuable service animal control officers provide by delivering abandoned animals to shelters where they can be cared for and adopted, helping to prevent the spread of rabies, and helping reconnect lost pets with their owners.
In honor of Animal Control Appreciation Week last month, our member shelters and placement groups told us about animal control officers they’d like to see receive a special prize from the PETCO Foundation. From more than 300 outstanding individuals, these three really stood out, as you’ll glimpse from the comments drawn from their nominations:
Norma Jacobs
Randolph Municipal Pound :: Randolph, NJ
"I have never met such a dedicated animal control officer. Norma will do anything for animals, and though she has multiple sclerosis, she has never missed a day of work because of her condition.”
Justin Mack
Valley River Animal Shelter :: Murphy, NC
"Our Humane Society and shelter provides animal control to four rural counties in southwestern NC. We have received nothing but praise for Justin."
Annje Waite
Maricopa County Animal Care & Control :: Phoenix, AZ
"I have never seen an animal control officer put forth so much energy, effort and time to help an animal. Courageous, determined, and heroic is how I describe this officer.”

June 9 is Donald Duck’s birthday (see sidebar at right), and while ducks, geese, chickens and other fowl can make wonderful, devoted pets, they do require some special considerations. You’ll need to check with your city or county agency to see if you can keep fowl, and if so, if there are restrictions on how and where they’re kept. Also, ducks and geese prefer company (birds of a feather flock together!) and do best in groups of five or more. If you’re considering adopting a duck, a goose or other fowl, check Petfinder.com to see if there are animals in your area in need of a home, and learn more about the rewards and special considerations for these pets.
Remember, we always welcome your comments, questions and suggestions, and thank you again for your support for homeless pets.
Until next month --

Betsy Saul
Founder and President, Petfinder.com
Donald Duck’s middle name is Fauntleroy – apparently because his hat was just like those that went with Little Lord Fauntleroy suits that were popular in the early 1900s!
