Last Chance Highway follows pet-rescuer Shelly Bookwalter and pet-transporter Kyle Peterson as they forge an alliance to give unwanted dogs across the South one last chance at survival.

Shelly spends hours finding and placing them with foster families, posting the available pets on Petfinder.com and interviewing potential adopters; she successfully places close to 650 rescued dogs with loving families every year.

Kyle works with Shelly and her volunteers to pick up adopted dogs to transport them to their new homes in the Northeast.

Mississippi dog rescuer Shelly Bookwalter spots a Pit Bull mom with a litter of five freezing puppies out in the country on a rural back porch. Shelly approaches the owner in an attempt to rescue the dogs, and can save only two female puppies. One of the puppies must battle a life-threatening illness, while the other puppy is adopted and transported to New York City. Shelly also fosters Rusty, a spunky stray Chihuahua. Rusty quickly makes a lasting impression on her husband Curtis and ends up finding an unexpected new home.

THE MIRACLE PUPPY

A hungry stray and her litter of puppies have made their home under the porch of an abandoned house. After a difficult rescue, Shelly hopes the adorable mutts will make easy adoptions, but an unexpected medical setback throws a spanner into the works: The runt of the litter is blind, making the adoption process even more challenging.

SAVING HOPE

Shelly, her husband Curtis and their son Cross spot a starving white dog on the side of the road. A trap is set, and once the dog is caught, Shelly and Curtis rush her to the vet's office. Shelly has a heartbreaking decision to make: If the dog, named Hope, is heartworm-positive, she will have to euthanize her. Shelly must also contend with two rambunctious chocolate Labs. Pulled from the shelter's euthanasia list, these constant diggers cause problems for their foster mom as Shelly tries to find them a permanent home.
