Things to Think About When Using Volunteers

THANK YOU'S
Remember to let volunteers know that you appreciate their hard work and dedication.

UNIFORMS
Give out t-shirts or ask volunteers to wear appropriate dress so they are identified on the day of the event.

ORIENTATION
Require volunteers to come to an orientation so they can meet other volunteers and are clear on all aspects of the event ie: arrival time, roles, dress.

CREW LEADERS
Appoint volunteers to be the captain of a committee or crew if the event is large.

CHILDREN
Make sure you have a parental signature on all forms if you accept children as volunteers.

RECRUITMENT
There are many places in the community to find volunteers. Be creative. Go outside your regular volunteer team.

STAFF
Some staff will want to volunteer for events, others will want to be paid. Make sure staff knows what is expected of them. Inconsistency in policy can cause problems.

APPLICATION
Ask all volunteers to fill out an application which includes the name and address of a person to call in case of an emergency.

HOSPITALITY AREA
Let volunteers know that you care about them. Offer them food, a separate bathroom, and a place to rest.

MANUAL
Give all volunteers written materials about the event. Document all aspects of volunteer jobs for future events.

LISTEN
Listen to volunteer suggestions. It makes them feel important and you might hear a great idea.
