When The Artist (formerly known as Prince) denounced the treatment of sheep in the production of wool clothing on the liner notes of his album Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, he had no idea he would receive an award for his words. “I’ve received many awards, but I’m truly humbled to be here,” he said as he accepted his Genesis Award from The Ark Trust, an Encino, CA-based animal protection organization. “This has been a moving experience just being in the room with all of you.”
His sentiments were felt by all of the 23 winners at the Fourteenth Annual Genesis Awards, held on March 18, 2000. Included among the winners were the Discovery Channel for its documentary “When Dogs Smile & Chimpanzees Cry”; New York’s Newschannel 4 for its series, “Unfair Game,” which examined the cruelty behind canned hunts; William Ecenbarger for his Reader’s Digest article, “Scandal of America’s Puppy Mills”; the PBS show Nature for its documentary, “A Conversation with Koko,” about Koko the gorilla’s use of sign language; feature films Instinct and The Iron Giant; and television programs Judging Amy, Popular, Leeza and MTV’s Road Rules. The winners are chosen from all areas of the news and entertainment media for exemplary accomplishment in spotlighting animal issues with creativity and integrity.
The ceremony, hosted by Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me) and Frasier’s David Hyde Pierce, was attended by a variety of animal-loving celebrities, including Guests of Honor Karl Ammann, a photographer and conservation activist dedicated to saving primates from the bush-meat trade, and interspecies communication pioneer Dr. Francine “Penny” Patterson.
