Fur, leather, chemical testing of cosmetics and toiletries—the fashion industry has long exploited animals for the sake of human vanity. As a model, Heather Chase did not want to be a part of this cruelty. So in 1998 she founded Models with Conscience (MWC), an international group of fashion models dedicated to promoting cruelty-free products.
“Models play a role [in the sales of cruelty-free products] because we are hired to influence consumer decisions,” says Chase. “MWC strives to influence consumers positively and encourage them to use their buying power humanely.”
Charity is also an important part of MWC’s mission. Most of the models donate time or money to animal welfare organizations, and MWC donates to such groups as Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Beauty Without Cruelty USA and The Ark Trust.
MWC welcomes inquiries from interested models. For more information, write to Models with Conscience, P.O. Box 1790, Sedona, AZ 86339-1790, or log onto their website at www.modelswc.com.
