Humane Society at Lollypop Farms
We're Looking for a Fight! And, unfortunately, we're finding them. Animal fighting is happening in our community. This cruel sport claims victims everyday and it is up to us to put an end to it.
For the past two years the Humane Society at Lollypop Farm has been working with the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, the Rochester Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, City NET, The City Law Department, Rochester Animal Services, and Rochester Housing Authority on an Anti-Animal Fighting Task Force dedicated to putting an end to illegal animal fighting. We've created an educational video designed to educate law enforcement and community agencies about the indicators and dangers of animal fighting and have had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of members of our community about this heinous crime.
A new awareness campaign, launched in August 2001, takes our message to the streets. The campaign, created by Art Director Michelle French of Thresh Creative Associates, photographer Kurtis Kracke of KSC Studio, and copywriter Dan Mulcahy, includes billboards, bus cards, posters, PSAs and postcards mailed to neighborhoods most often affected by animal fighting. The message is serious and simple, we're looking for information about animal fighting and we're willing to pay for it.
In recent months there have been a number of high-profile animal fighting-related arrests. Currently Lollypop Farm is housing 39 pit bulls that are victims of this blood-thirsty sport and are waiting for a court to decide their fate. Sadly, we know that for every dog we have in our custody, there are dozens more out there being trained and fought with no regard for their individual pain and suffering.
Dog fighting is a menace to our society at every level. Animal-fighting events are riddled with drugs, gambling and illegal weapons. Children are often witnesses to the training and even the fighting of animals, fostering in them a frightening disrespect for other living creatures. The dogs themselves are unsafe members of society as they have been bred for generations for intense aggression, resulting in the horrifying bites that occur so often. Fighting dogs do not discriminate, when incensed they care little about whether their victim is an unsuspecting dog or a helpless child.
What can you do? Help! Help by donating your time, talents or dollars.
