| The photo says The Statesman Journal on it. I would try to find them on google to get the address of that gas station and pass it on though it does seem like an obvious location. Ask for the name of the photographer or just email the editor about the photo and let him/her know you are seeking the address for the dog's rescue. Just work on it and don't give up! |

Hi Corlea,
I posted about this heartbreaking scene. You can find the post here:
http://forums.petfinder-network.com/viewtopic.php?t=73855
I have been researching the web ever since our local newspaper
ran this picture and I found an article date 09/08/05 with a
little more info.
http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050908/NEWS/509080344
If you read the whole article, there is more about the dog towards
the bottom. Maybe this article can help track down, find and
rescue this loyal pooch.
I hope & pray!
I will also try to send this info to -IcanHelp- at petfinders as well as to the email she mentions
about someone who is interested in adopting this so deserving, loyal pupper.
Love and {{{{{{hugs}}}}} to all Animal Lovers!

The last sentence is key: "Just work on it and don't give up!" I hope you succeed!

I was able to see the picture but not get the story. What I did get contained another story of somebody they found dead in a house, the dog would not leave him and they had to leave the dog. Two different stories. They both upset me so if anyone finds out about either one please post. Hoping that since the first little guy is outside a gas station and visible that somebody will help. The other one doesn't look good.

WAGNER's MEAT SERVICE STATION
WAGNER's MEAT STORE
Winn-Dixie Marketplace on Chefmenseur Boulevard, across the street from the gas station.
So far, Oregon soldiers have encountered many horrible smells and shocking sights, such as the corpse at the gas station.
Passersby told the soldiers that the man was shot during a scuffle about access to gasoline at the Wagner's Meat Service station, which is located in a commercial area two miles northeast of the French Quarter.
The dead man apparently had taken refuge in the gas station after floodwaters receded from Hurricane Katrina, with goods apparently taken from nearby stores. Near the poodle Wednesday was a fifth of vodka, a six-pack of beer, some new clothing and other items. Two sleeping bags were on the ground.
Wagner's Meat store, attached to the gas station, was smashed and looted.
Stray dogs are a common sight around town, said Sgt. Darron Wilson of Brownsville, who is with 1186th Military Police Company.
"We try to pitch out pieces of MREs when we've got 'em," said Wilson, referring to the military's Meals Ready to Eat. "You throw it out on the ground. They take off running. They're still a little scared."
Tuesday night, the Salem-based soldiers were summoned to the Winn-Dixie Marketplace on Chefmenseur Boulevard, across the street from the gas station. Both are located in the broad swath of territory assigned for patrol by Oregon troops.
A motorist smashed into the grocery store, which has been a popular target for looters.
"Apparently, there were four shots fired last night when our troops were securing the building," said Michelle Perez, a member of the 1186th who also works as a state corrections officer.
Guard members were recalled from the scene and local police took over. Without night-vision gear, the soldiers weren't able to effectively use their weapons to defend themselves, said Capt. Trent Klugg, commander of the 1186th and a Salem resident.
Besides guarding the Winn-Dixie from looters on Wednesday, soldiers also took in the somber scene of the corpse being watched over by what all assumed had been his dog. The dog was weak, but sat serenely -- as if expecting his owner to awaken from a nap.
Soldiers tried to talk to the dog, but he did not respond and stared straight ahead. Unable to help, soldiers left and grimly predicted that the dog would die because he refused to eat.
However, among the items discarded in the nearby parking lot of the Winn-Dixie store was a 20-pound bag of dog food -- untouched and ignored.

Hi, I am finally a member! Icanhelp posted the message from me last night. I would do whatever it takes to give that precious little soul a loving home. If anyone has any info at all, please please please let me know!! I've contacted just about every place I can think of or find - along with posting on Craigslist. I would drive down and save him/her. Like I said, I'd do anything to save him/her from more heartbreak.
Thank you so much - so glad I can FINALLY "talk" to you all!!

| I just posted about this dog under another topic. It breaks my heart to look at the picture. The article about the dog never really said what happened to him. I just don't understand how photographers and reporters can just point their camera at an animal that obviously needs help for the purpose of the story and then walk away. I am very dissapoited in my fellow man. |
