Hello,

I just wondered if any animal welfare groups organize in times like these to try to get peoples' pets out of the evacuation areas? Sad

I just know many people probably left their animals behind.

Chained and no where to go. Bless their little hearts.

I know--it breaks my heart. But, some people shelters won't accept pets--I think that is horrible!
I prayed for the critters and people too.

Most of the humane societys and pounds etc had to evacuate the areas and move the animals ...Noahs Wish is attempting to get a team in those areas to set up housing for pets and animals . RED Cross would have a nightmare if they took animals to ...so we need to get folks educated and get plans made way before they need this ..ON what will I do with my animals and how will I get them there ? Sometimes folks take there animals and stay in the car out side the shelter until a solution can be found .Its sad that folks leave them behind ......

Kutin, any updates on Dallas...you can PM me b/c I don't want to get this post off the important original topic. If I was living on my own (i'm 15), I would SO take that dog!

Also, does anyone know if any pets have sadly died? I know it's negative, but I am just curious...maybe I don't even WANT to know Sad ...

From the BestFriends website - http://www.bestfriends.org

Best Friends is coordinating efforts with rescue groups to find animals that have been left in Louisiana and Mississippi homes.
Please get the word out to anyone you know who had to leave behind an animal that they can write to hurricane@bestfriends.org or call 435.644.3965 ext.4455 and leave the following information:

Name and current contact information
Address where animal was left
Name of pet
Description of pet (species, breed, distinguishing characteristics)
Photo if available.

We will get this information to emergency command posts in the hope of getting to these houses and getting the animals out. We are doing everything we can to try to make this happen.

EARS and HS DART Teams have been authorized to go into some of the areas, to rescue the animals.

If you want to coordinate efforts you should contact either of these groups.

If they are to get the animals to safety, they will need all the extra help they can get, but it must be an organized effort.

Unless you are law enforcement or military, or FEMA authorized, you will NOT be able to get access to the area.

There are many groups setting up to help the animals from the Humane Society of the United States, the American Humane society, Alley Cat Allies, Best Friends, United Animals Nation, Noahs Wish and more. It's exciting to know there are groups out there to help! I wish there was a group that would set up shelters BEFORE hurricanes for pets, this would help so many people that stay behind for their pets sakes!

SPCA help for animals
Friday, 9:50 p.m.

There's hope for stranded pets in the New Orleans area.
The Louisiana SPCA, New Orleans' animal control agency,
has begun rescuing pets from owners houses.

Louisiana SPCA director Laura Maloney said shelter workers
follow other agencies and crews through neighborhoods and
rescue pets, some that are locked in houses.
At the owners' request, "we break in," she said.

Owners have to call or email the operation and give their name
and address and information about where the pet is confined.

The hotline number is: 1-225-578-6111.
E-mail should be sent to
Katrinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com.

The hotline already is in effect, Maloney said. "It's busy an awful lot.
We are trying to get a bank of telephones"
