I actually just joined the memberlist so I could chime in on this one! Pitts get such a bad rap... someone said that you could train them not to attack and be friendly, but it's the opposite. People train them TO attack and NOT be friendly. If they're raised in an environment as PETS and members of the family they're wonderful animals. Unfortunately these irresponsible people who think it's fun to watch dogs bleed and die are ruining this breed's chances of living happy lives. My husband and I are looking to adopt a dog from the shelter and of the four shelters we visited and approximately 80 dogs we saw, EXACTLY 5 were not pitbulls or pitbull mixes. It's heartbreaking because we camp a lot and are looking forward to taking our dog with us, but in checking with KOA and other campgrounds, pitbulls are a no-no (at least in California). It's not the campgrounds' fault... it's insurance related. Same as homeowner's insurance out here... you own a pit, your premium goes up. It would be nice to see the prejudices go away but there's as good a chance of that as the bad dog owners disappearing off the earth.

Oh no! Pit Bulls not allowed at KOA's or campgrounds? When did this happen? Our pits go everywhere with us, including camping. We haven't had a problem yet, but maybe it depends on the individual management of the campground.

I think you should have more options for your poll. The APBT could be a great dog for some families, but not so great for others. For example, if you have other pets, it should also NEVER be assumed that the APBT will get along with other same sex dogs. Some APBT's will be fine, but they should ALWAYS be supervised when around other dogs.

Most people hear pitbull and it brings to mind man eating dogs. We have a 6 month old pitty girl and when my parents (actually everyone else too) heard that we got a pitbull, they were terrified saying things like, "those are terrible, mean, dogs" and "why would you want a dog like that?!" Anyone who has an APBT and is a responsible pet guardian, knows that the APBT is a loving, loyal, intelligent dog. The media ONLY adds to the "bad dog view" and prints only the bad stories. They never print the stories about pitbulls being therapy dogs and visiting hospitals. It is a shame that they have gotten such a bad rap!!

I will agree with everyone here and add the fact that as it was stated certain dogs have certain traits inherited in them. MOST people do not research the breed or think "I just will raise it or train it not to". THIS is a bad idea when it comes to pits because having rescued and being owned by them.. I know all to well that they just would rather sit with their person then be with a dog. Many dogs tend to be lonely without another canine.

Dont get me wrong, my babies play together, hangin with the kids et -All under supervision and they respect and have been learning 'signals' dogs give when they want to go to bed or be left alone. We do not leave them alone (ANY of our dogs) without us home, with new people around and we do not ever walk off leash.

I feel any new dog parents should do some research, even with mixed pups/dogs you can watch them and see what things they need. With training (obedience/puppy classes) I feel reading your dog should be the first three weeks !

All reputable Pit Bull sites will tell you just have one, or be prepared to lead a 'rotating' life LOL The rewards of having one in your life are great and if someone is devoted and will care for them and do what they need to have a good life together- so be it. Most people though are being lax in caring for them now, because so many people are saying Just raise 'em right.

I have had 2 pits here since they were babies, raised with children, cats, other dogs, goats, rabbits, - still I wont EVER leave them alone with them. They get to sit with the cats, dance with the kids and go out to parks. I am just safe with them. I knew from the get go it would be so much work, but I was willing to do it to have a wigle butt suck face baby in my life.

I did learn the hard way 9 years ago. No one died, but my cocker had the scare of her life. I was watching a pit and YUP I am one of the people who said WHAT BAD DOGS! Especially after that scene.. what happened you ask? Well a simple mistake many people make.. A TOY ! was on the couch much growling followed. They were fine for a week.. I dont know what happened (that was sarcasm LOL).

I know they are great dogs and wonderful friends for children, but without knowing the precautions that need to be taken it can mean death for your dog and possibly a human or other animal.

Pittie Lovers KNOW how great they are and people afraid of them should NOT EVER get them.

I'm not trying to make people to change there minds. *even I wish they would* Well in a way I do... I want everyone to see Pitbulls in more than one light. Yes there are more attacks with this breed than say the golden, BUT we don't always get ALL of the facts about what was going on to make the dog attack. Like some one could of been too close to there owner. Or the person could of raised there hands showing (posing as a threat) or whatever the case. I work with alot of pitbulls and I've NEVER seen one just throw its self at a person, ok there was this one time BUT IT WAS KISSING THE PERSON. (so there) Very Happy Razz *kissys* hehe

In my eyes all dogs are good no matter what the case even if they bite there could of been somthing we did to set them off.

We us humans pulled the dog from the wild (wolfs) WE made them house pets. WE trined them to hunt, gard or whatever. WE changed the dogs into what WE wanted. Because WE did this they still have pray drives, that earge to hunt. So we got what we wanted....

I live with a pit mix, and babysit one all the time (actually she is coming this Saturday!).

Both of them get along with cats and other dogs.

My yorkie is much worse with the cats than either of the pit mixes are.

Just my experience.

I treat every dog as an individual based on evaluation.

I'm afraid that the current trends are going to make pits almost impossible to own. Sad Ontario will start the official ban in September of this year, Denver has already started, I know several towns here make it illegal to own more than one......Unfortunately when this happens, the only people who will have pits are exactly the ones responsible for their bad reputation. The responsible pit owners will be the ones obeying the laws - not the people who do dogfighting or train them to protect their drugs.

The campground that I noticed the 'no pits' rule at specifically was the Manchester Beach KOA (near Mendocino). They actually had it in their newsletter. When I asked about it, I was told that this was the case with a lot of campgrounds and depending on the insurance company, it can also happen with Rottweilers, Dobermans, and German Shepherds.

Denver Backing Away from Breed Ban Legislation
Click this link for the story: http://www.9news.com/acm_news.aspx?OSGNAME=KUSA&IKOBJECTID=e5898f14-0abe-421a-0050-1168eb2f4f6f&TEMPLATEID=0c76dce6-ac1f-02d8-0047-c589c01ca7bf

The City of Denver has apparently discovered that a 'round up and kill' strategy might just create more havoc publicly than it was originally intended to quell. Obviously, it has animal rights activists throughout the U.S. readying to pounce on shoddy legislation policies.

With the clear intent to aggressively fight back against those who would shred our Constitutional Rights without regard for civil liberties and the protections guaranteed American citizens, Denver legislators are scrambling for cover.

It is not time to back down. It is time to uncover which politicians drafted the Breed Ban Legislation proposals and which ones supported it so they can be replaced in the next election. If they were so willing to lay aside the Constitutional Rights of the people they were elected to protect, they are unfit for office.

Further, at this time it is unknown how many Pit Bulls were handed over as demanded and subsequently destroyed. We need this information so a class action lawsuit can formally proceed. Please share any information you have with us, publicizing the plight of the caregivers who were forced to forfeit their canine companions.

The City of Denver will, of course, seek to control damages by offering a token 'award' to those individuals involved.

While the Denver situation represents a significant victory in itself, we must recognize the inherent threat it represents. Denver is known as one of the areas where particularly bold legislation is first enacted so that legislators can get an idea of the level of tolerance they can expect from the American public.

Breed Specific Legislation is pending in many communities throughout the U.S. and must not be tolerated. Instead, we need honest, effective investigators, law enforcement personnel and district attorneys who will address the two primary issues that have led to Breed Specific Legislation: 1] Legislation designed to strengthen the dog fighting laws already on the books by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting dog fighting afficionados, and 2] outlawing chronic chaining of canines that has clearly been shown to lead to aggressive behavior.

The USAnimalProtection Blog
Welcome, Friends!

This blog is going to be an important facet of the work of US Animal Protection. We want your thoughts and ideas, concerns and successes to be a vital part of the work of this organization and providing a forum for all of us to share information in a timely and concise manner is key to our success. We welcome your participation!

Of course we are all concerned about the Breed Ban legislation [and fallout] happening in Denver. How horrible for these animals and their caregivers to have to endure such callous and inhumane treatment!

Beyond the sheer ridiculousness of this action, there is an even larger picture: this legislation is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. We are guaranteed in our civil liberties to be free from illegal search and seizure. According to the Constitution, Congress shall pass NO LAW that violates the Constitution. Thus, this law is ILLEGAL and we need a civil rights attorney to represent us in order to have it declared illegal and subsequently abolished.

Since this is a top priority, we are raising funds to hire the necessary legal team to push forward this agenda and will be having rallies to reverse breed ban legislation so that instead of having to fight this issue on a case by case basis, we will succeed in having such legislation properly declared unConstitutional, thereby negating the need for ongoing litigation and eliminating the threat of breed bans throughout the United States.

We need your support. It is imperative that this information be shared with those persons living in areas that have or are considering breed bans. You will find a template on our site ready to print and post. Just go to www.usanimalprotection.org/breedbannotice.htm

We need people to arrange to pass these out in effected areas such as Denver. Time is of the essence and if we hope to gain an injunction preventing them from continuing to round up these defenseless animals we must act quickly!

Call us if you have questions! 1.888.710. 4184. You will find people willing to make contributions to stop this legistlation, contact us for a receipt pad. If you wish to provide baked goods and set up an information stand at WalMart, Sam's or other outlets, we can assist in getting this high traffic placement for you. Contact us for details.

Otherwise, circulate these notices everywhere and put them on every bulletin board and in every publication possible -- particularly in Denver and other places in which this legislation is being passed. There is nothing on our site that is not covered under the Fair Use Act, so you are free to use [and distribute] anything posted.

Thank You for your efforts!
