sorry, i don't trust most pits, but i blame that on the owners, not the dogs. the problem is those jaws. once they grab, they don't let go.
my mom's boss was attacked by one last week, she was walking down the street and a pit, by itself, walked past her. then it turned and grabbed her leg. she is seriously injured. this was in florida.
around here,(long island, new york) no pit can be trusted, because most of the people who have them around here WANT them mean. again, totally the fault of the owner. it's a shame that the people have given the breed a bad rap. |

Their jaws are no different from any other dog, besides the basic fact that they are strong dogs. Their jaws do not "lock", they can let go just like any other dog. |

Proud owner here! I am apprehensive when coming across ANY strange dog. I have been bit twice in my life, first by my neighbors GSD when I was about 6 (my fault, shouldn't have stuck my face so close) and the other time breaking up a fight between my shepx and labx.
So many people voted to ban them... but where are their posts? |

| I don't think the pitbull is the right breed for me (I did research on various breeds before getting my Aussies), but that doesn't make them bad dogs. However, they are NOT for everyone, as I realized when looking into them. Then, I don't think there is any breed that is right for everyone. |

yes they can let go, their jaws dont lock...however, in a fighting situation they choose to NOT let go. and they are strong enough to not have to in most cases. |

I don't know if my vote worked or not, but I adore the breed. I also think most people should not have a pittie. I think the breed as a whole is suffering as horribly as it is because so many well meaning people adopt/buy them and have no clue about the breed. I no longer walk my dogs in my neighborhood because of neighbors with pit bulls who would attack my dogs in a heartbeat. So, while I adore them, if I'm walking my dogs, the last thing I want to see is a loose pittie.
Working for animal control for years, I've known thousands of pit bulls. I can't believe how many people have only met one or two. I wish I didn't see the number that I do everyday I don't see them as an unpredictable breed. I think they generally have great body language, from major little wiggle butts to wanting to kill you (the vast majority being of the wiggle butt variety )
I'm in complete agreement with Shaye on the pit bull issue...so ditto what she said! |

"There is no bad breed, only bad breeding." This is true for pits more than most other dogs. that couldn't be said better. i love pitts i don't have one but i know a few people that do and they most dangerous thing is their touges. and i've worked with a few at the shelter sweeties...in truth i'm more afraid of that little nasty poodle next door then a pitty.
it would let me vote... so their great just not for everyone... |

| Pitters make excellent companions when the owner has done their research and learn everything they can about the breed before getting one. I have worked at shelters and veterinary clinics and not once have I seen a "bad" pitter. I would rather have a pitter to work on than some of the small breeds like chihuahuas, etc., that tend to be one person dogs. |

I did not read this post but all I have to say is I am a proud Am. Staff Terrier owner which is like a pit and I would not give him up for the world he is a big love bug. It is my beagle mix that you have to watch out for.

| I absolutely love these dogs. I have a Pit bull / Cane Corso mix and she is awsome. I do think they are not a breed for everyone, because they need and deserve responsible owners. |

Your dog is so beautiful. I think that everytime I see one of your posts, sorry I didn't say something sooner. He is one of the most adorable dogs I have ever seen, like a little angel. |

I don't think banning a breed will accomplish anything. My vet lists the pits he sees as boxer-x, lab-x, etc. Doubt that actually treats a pit
Oh....Shaye-my love I've missed you! |

I was one of the ones who voted for them to be banned.
Now, before you jump all over me, that isn't really what I feel. I believe that ownership of pits should be *highly regulated* not necessarily banned. Being a Republican, "regulations" are against my nature but I honestly believe that pits should be owned only by those people who truly have done their research about the breed and who understand what they will have to do to be a responsible owner. |
