| Ok lets assume that you live in a safe community and your dog can not get out. Is it ok to let your dog out to play unsupervised in your fenced in yard???? |

BECAUSE THEY ARE DOGS....they have COATS I dont have, double insulated, and because they are fed good food that puts oils in those coats, they are water resistance. I am NOT. the lab has a double coat and LOVES to be outside in the cold. she was bred for being out in the cold. If you care to research it, Labs were NOT bred in Labrador, but in Newfoundland. Its COLD in Newfoundland. They were orignally bred to bring fish nets to shore, in freezing cold water.
FREEZING COLD WATER.
My foxhound was raised in a kennel, with other hounds who hunted on a regular basis..again, used to being outside. are they better equipped to handle the cold than I am? ABSOLUELTY YES.
maybe you should get over the thought that dogs are little people in fur coats. they can handle a whole lot more than we can, and should be ABLE to be oustide when they want to be. MINE want to be outside, they LIKE it out there. when they want to come in, as I already stated, the lab barks, I let them in... |

One of mine wants to eat poop all the time. He LIKES it. It is his food of preferance. So because thats what he wants that means I should let him ?
Oh thats right. He's a dog. He doesnt have the same rational decision making capability.
hmmm who is confusing people with dogs now.....??? |

Sorry if I was a little hatefull in my come back, but it did hit a nerve
| Quote: | | You took one or two week old puppies out of the house and to a strange place to stay for a week? I'm glad nothing happened to them--for future reference...bad move! Puppies that young don't have the immune system to fight off viruses and other diseases they may encounter, nor do they have the necessary vaccinations. Puppies really should not go anywhere save for the vet or outdoors to potty until they are much older and have finished their puppy shots |
I actually asked the vet and the shelter and they said that it was perfactly fine!!!!!!!! I wouldn't do anything to hurt or endanger the puppies!!!!!!!!! |

| This is getting ridiculous. Did she say that the puppies were only 1 or 2 weeks old? Did she say they didn't have their first shots? Did she say anywhere that she exposed them to any unsafe conditions? Sure, puppies' immune systems are not well developed - but they and the mother were possibly better off traveling with them than they might have been with a petsitter who could not come more than a couple of times a day. And any good kennel will not take puppies, so that would not be an option. This way they had more constant care and attention - very important at that stage and less stressful for the mother dog. Did she say she is leaving the dogs outside all day in frigid weather, or for any extended period of time? Can we stop making judgements when we don't have the facts????? |

| well Sarah, heres food for thought. In a wolf pack, the mom wolf will eat the feces of her puppies to keep the den clean, until the puppies are old enough to go out of the den and soil outside. is that wrong? by many peoples standards, its despicable. its still natural for them. and they manage to get thru it. Imagine that! dogs are descended from wolves, and still have the instincts that wolves had. will I let my dogs eat poop? no, not if i can stop it. will I let them, with their insulated coats and better capability of exisiting outside, out in the yard where they can play and exercise and have fun with each other? YES, I will. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the pups are now three weeks old. If they went on a "weeklong vacation", simple arithmatic shows that they were one or two weeks old (I will assume they were not under a week old).
| Quote: | | Did she say they didn't have their first shots? |
Puppies do not get their first shots, generally, until they are 6 weeks old.

For an unvaccinated puppy, ANY PLACE is unsafe--things like parvo virus are EVERYWHERE. Vaccinated dogs are either protected and older dogs can fight these off. _________________ Don't say goodbye

kac - your arguments (and the breeds of dogs you have) seems very similar to another poster that was recently banned. Wierd....
The point isnt the poo eating. The point is a rational decision making process that doesnt exist in dogs (at least not as in humans). Given a choice dogs would probably do a lot of things differently than the way we construct their lives. That doesnt mean it would be what is best for them. |

Sorry - in all the nonsense, I guess I got confused and missed the post that said what age the puppies were, so I stand corrected. And I am well aware of vaccination schedules and the dangers of parvo, kennel cough, etc. But if the puppies were that young, I doubt that she would have them in any situations where they would be exposed to parvo - she apparently did discuss this with the shelter/vet and I would assume they told her what precautions she would need to take.
I'm just amazed at all the sniping that seems to result from someone simply asking for help with a problem. |

| Well actualy the pups were born Jan. 30th so they are what 5 weeks or so?? We were on Vacation from about Jan.16th through the 23rd or so!! They would have been about 3 weeks right??????????? Any way the house that we stayed in has only had one well cared for and vaccinated dog in it for the last 10 years and the dog wasn't let any where around them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think there was a hire chance they would get parvo from my house than the other!!!!! |

Man, I just wish I had a fenced in yard so I wouldn't have to be outside every waking minute Mazie is. I was so sick this weekend and could barely move, let alone walk or run outside with her for more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time. She was probably just as misarable as I was this weekend and will be stir crazy all week because of her lack of exercise this weekend.
I have my opinions, but am much too fatigued to sit and type all them out. Besides I think everyone's already got their minds made up and I wouldn't do any good explaining my views on the subject.
A side note though: Reena, do you go to the park at a regular time on Sunday's? I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to meet you their on occasion if it worked out. I have been so proud of Mazie lately. She used to take off and could care less about me there. Now, she'll run ahead, but keeps looking back to make sure I am still around. And we don't fight to leave like I see so many other dogowners do. I just start walking up the path to the gate and she'll follow me (if she isn't already ahead of me ready to leave...) So I hope to see you there on occasion. |

Quite honestly, I don't know any vet who would ok bringing three week old puppies anywhere...most would highly dissuade it.
The fact is...the danger exists out there for puppies. While nothing happened, luckily, it wasn't the best of moves. _________________ Don't say goodbye

Actually I've been going to the Madison parks on Sundays. But I went to our park today, and it was one big pond because of the thaw. We didn't stay long because it was so wet, and only about 1/3 of the path was walkable. When it freezes we should be able to bring our ice skates!

I've been dreading this time of year out there. Are the Madison parks better? I may be moving to Stoughton depending on where Ryan gets a job. We'll see. |
